A county is normally larger than a city, although New York City is made of 5 different counties. 48 of the 50 US states have counties. Alaska has something similar called boroughs, although they do not cover the entire state. Louisiana has parishes which act the same as counties. Not all counties have county seats and county courthouses, as someone else noted, a few of the New England states do not. Someone else also stated that Canada does not have counties. That is not true because they have counties in Ontario. |

The answer is.....
It depends!
To elaborate, a county is a portion of a state. Usually, a town or a city is within a single county. However, there are exceptions:
New York City is the biggest exception. Five counties (New York, Bronx, Richmond, Queens, and Kings) make up New York City. |

A county is bigger......
A county: is generally a sub-unit of regional self-government within a larger jurisdiction.
A city: is primarily used to designate an urban settlement with a large population. However, city may also indicate a special administrative, legal, or historical status.
Hope it helped |

A County is. In the U.S., all states within the country are divided into many different counties, all with their own courthouses (where you go to pay tickets, buy licenses, etc). In those counties may be several cities...or towns. Usually the largest city is centrally located in the county and is the "County Seat." |
