Which place is better? New York or Chicago?

Hai Everyone. I and my roommate always have this argument about NY and Chicago. I keep saying NY is anyday better place than chicago and my roomie keep saying the other way round. So please can anybody say which place is better and why? I will be really thankful.

Chicago vs. New York. It depends on what you like. Do you like that the bars seem to be open 20 hours a day? NY. Do you like that people smile at strangers on the street? Chicago. Do you like that you can see a celebrity on any street corner? NY. Do you want to have a apartment bigger than a closet for less than $1000? Chicago. The best shopping in the world? NY. Affordable shopping? Chicago. Both have snobby clubs with meathead bouncers that only let the gorgeous people in. Both have beautiful skylines. Both have great food. Both have two baseball teams that could be more different. I think Chicago is cleaner, I think NY is louder. NY is the city that never sleeps, so if you like to, Chicago.

CHITOWN IS BETTER

IT IS CLEANER.
CHEAPER TO LIVE IN.
AND CHI PEOPLE DON'T LIVE UP TO STEREOTYPES LIKE NYC PEEPS.

I've been to both. I liked Chicago more, because it was a little less intimidating to me.
NYC is just huge. I love it, but I felt very intimidated there.
I never felt that way in Chicago.

I live in NYC and I hate it. I'm sure Chicago is better.

New York is waaaay too crowded. The bridges suck too. I'm not sure how good New York's public transit system is, but Chicago's can get you anywhere you want to go.

Chicago - not the least of which because we Chicagoans know it's MORE FUN, not funner.

I've been to NYC, and it's beautiful, but it is so much busier! More imposing, too.

I prefer Chicago because it's more laid back, and seems smaller and closer together.

But then, I can't wait to go back to Long Island and go to The Shack! CLAMS!!! yum...

im from chicago and i 'll never go to new york!!

Chicago is better hands down...why? for many reasons...

1st is Traffic...sure in Chicago we have two seasons, Winter and Construction....but when you think about it for the most part its a lot easier to get around Chicago and its burbs than it is New York...Twice in the last six years I've gotten stuck in traffic in NYC coming in or going out....and the worst part is you have bad traffic extending into NJ....you may have some residual traffic jams coming into Chicago from Indiana or Wisconsin but its not bad comparatively speaking.

2nd....its overall cheaper to live here....yes there are certain areas of Chicago that are big bucks but there are also certain areas which are not too bad crimewise where you can still get a good deal. In addition, public transportation far and wide is better here and less confusing....plus that you have a virtual melting pot of neighborhoods where you can get anything from a McDonald's Cheeseburger to Mabenka's pierogies (Polish Food) to an Indian Restaurant or two up on Devon Ave and everything in between.

3rd...when you do get tired of Chicago its easier to get away....(see #1 as well). Here in Chicago we have 3 states within a couple hours of Chicago....and once you get out of the city proper its smooth sailing pretty much...you are within an hour or two of Milwaukee (which is a smaller version of Chicago IMHO), SW Michigan, Indiana, and a couple hours west from Iowa. And Illinois itself has its share of great places to see if you like nature too. (Theres more than flat lands in Illinois thats for sure!)

4....the food...like #2 where you can almost every ethnic food under the sun, Chicago is also known for their deep dish pizzas and Chicago Style Hot Dogs (hold the ketchup, please!). Also if you're Polish, come Mardi Gras time, a paczki (poonchki) is the best and is very famous in Chicago.

And these are just a handful of the reasons I like Chicago....check out the link below and see some of the other things you can do in Chicago....enjoy!

Ariii<3's answer should tell you the type of city New York. In chicago we have more fun, in new york - its funner.

Go with Chicago, we are fun and educated. :-)

Its all about personal preference. New York is obviously THE major US city, and dominates the East Coast. Chicago is only one of the US' major cities and dominates the Midwest. Frankly, I think it comes down to East Coast versus Midwest. New York and the East coast is a little more exciting, but Chicago and the Midwest is a little more livable.

No one can really say which is better, but I would be so bold to say neither is all that its cracked up to be. New York and Chicago are such cliches, and though they can be thrilling and glamorous, they are really just made up of a bunch of small town ex-pats who moved there after watching Sex and the City. They aren't that cool, and both are more like huge spectacles of buildings than actual "normal" cities.

For me I'd pick cities like Philidelphia, Baltimore, Cleveland or St. Louis over New York or Chicago. They are on a more reasonable human scale, have plenty of things to do like professional sports, housing is so much more affordable, shopping is fine, they aren't overrun with tourists, they have history and culture, traffic is better, and they've maintained more authenticity.

I've known people who have lived in all kinds of places. Yes, there are some die hard New York and Chicago fans, but my impression from people who aren't all caught up in the status of cities in popular culture admit that New York and Chicago are great places to work but not to live. They have great professional cultures that make them great places to do business. In terms of attitude, cost of living, and convenience they fail. I'd personally rather "work to live" than "live to work".
