I am going there on Friday!!
It's probably going to be really hot and humid in the summer.
Here is a link to some activities I listed in another answer:

Summers can get muggy and the water may be too warm to really cool off I come from a tourist town so I fit right in. The locals are friendly and helpful. Even the cops seemed to have a sense of humor. More willing to give our a smile than a ticket. -yeah treated like that makes one want to go back.
Here is a link to a calender of events.
What I liked when I was there:
1) Eat Conch and Real Key Lime Pie!
2) Watch the sunset. - It really is "the thing" to do there
3) Beaches are great - Some more family oriented than others.
4) Go to the south of the island to the southern most point in the USA. Photo op.
5) the Hemingway house tours
6) snorkel
7) fish off the docks.
8) check out the porpoises |

Well RMC I used to live in south Florida and I did go there a few times. There is always good fishing if that is what you like. Also swimming of course. You can scuba dive and rent jet ski's, you can rent a boat or go on a chartered one. There is a bar called the Elbow Room which is pretty famous but that might not be right for the kids. There is also a very large buoy at the very end on the keys that is a tourist attraction, great place for a picture. Hope that helps have fun! |

Its not really a "family place" really. There's alot of "strange" people there. For family activities there are jetski rentals, boat rides, parasailing, and ghost tours. Also, there is a place by the water where there are street preformers from about 5-9pm. They are pretty interesting. If you're with kids, I would stay away from Duval Street at night..it can get a bit crazy. |

I've been in mid September with my kids and we had a great time. did all the tourist stuff Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum (9 yr old son loved it), ghost tour, Sloppy Joe's, Hemingway's House, sunset harbor tours, etc. We were busy everyday and one day drove about half way up the Keys and explored along the way.
We went right after 9/11 after deciding to cancel our trip to Aruba because of flight problems. Everyone was disappointed not to go to Aruba and Key West was all we could find that fit our schedule on such short notice. The Holiday Inn squeezed us in and treated us like family. Everywhere we went people were friendly and made us feel welcome. Probably one of our best family vacations and everyone would go back in a flash.
best of luck to you! |

I went about 10 years ago and there wasn't much to do except bars and watersports. It's also a blinking long drive too! |
