Hey There

Why Michigan?

My job sends me to Michigan from time to time. I usually go with a coworker who is from there originally. We usually stay in Troy, Rochester and the surrounding areas.

I detest the place!!

It is not nice to look at, there is almost nothing to do, and the people seem to lack a certain something.... I don't know what, awareness, maybe?

Please, Michiganders, tell me what you like about the place.

Why on Earth would anyone capable decide to continue living in what, in my opinion, is a cultural wasteland?

Come up to Northern Michigan...the most gorgeous place on earth...come to Petoskey, Charlevoix, Harbor Springs and up to Sturgeon Bay..the tunnel of trees drive...gorgeous!!

detroitsports19
We are currently in a 1-state recession thanks to Hurricane Jennifer, but as soon as Mayor Kilpatrick and Governor Granholm are gone Michigan will much improve.

while you wait for that to happen, there is GREAT sports in Michigan. The Red Wings, Tigers, and Pistons are all at the top of there leagues. Head down to a Wings game!

(Crying tears)"Why michigaaan!!!!!!"
Quit your crying and try exploring the state a little more before passing such judgment!
There are some good places in Michigan, besides were are you from, let me guess, Florida or California, where everyone is a little pampered you know what!
Or perhaps new york where sewer rats make up the vast majority of the population, and as for the idiot who made the comment about Detroit, stay your punk butt in the racist infested woods of Howell or whatever hillbilly inbred place your from, Detroit has allot to offer, if your willing to give it a chance instead of letting the media brainwash you, because if you do, i suppose your one of those morons who think all military men are murderers and rapist too, huh!
Cereal city is an actual dump hole!

Muledancer
Maybe they _like_ it that way! I know that after over 20 years of "things to do" and "culture", I am extremely happy just to look at my neighbor's cow pasture.

You are a bonehead. Michigan is a wonderful place. Obviously you are just very close minded. You are clearly not from the midwest. I assume you are from somewhere warm and that is why you cant enjoy our winter wonderland. Good Luck with the rest of your life with that attitude.

Interesting, you stay in the 3 rd richest county in the nation and make generalized statements about the entire state. I've lived here and in 2 other states, of course been many other places in the USA and while some places are nice I've never seen this huge difference you generalized about. Yeah, I'd love to live on ocean fount property in HI, but guess what only a few people have that luxury. Michigan is not the center of western culture, nor is 99% the rest of the nation. If you're educated at all, what would be the purpose of the wild generalization you made?

What I supect is:
a. this is simply a bait question looking for a rise out of us.
b. you and your co-worker do not know what there is to do. You're un-informed boring people.

ChitLea
Please do not judge the whole state based on the Detroit area. There are many beautiful areas in Michigan and the people are not "lacking" anything. Maybe its you that is lacking something. We are who we are and if you don't like us then quit coming here! What a crappy attitude. Why don't you jump on a sled or strap on some skiis. Drive up north, visit the great lakes, hit up a Pistons or Tigers game... Seriously...

i love to hate MI. i love the people, i cant stand the government, the economy, the housing market....or much else, lol.

the long and the short of it is.....i have lived here my whole life, and i will stay here til i die. let me know next time you'll be in MI, i'll show you the FUN side of Oakland County!!

Yahooligan
Haha michigan is actually one of the most beautiful states that there is. If your going to stay in the middle of a huge city, you should expect that it will be a "cultural wasteland" . Try visiting the places further north, or even in the U.P in the summertime, it's amazing.

Since you detest Michigan so much, count it a blessing you don't live here.

Also, maybe you can express your displeasure with your superiors and they can find someone else to take your place when needing to do business in Michigan. You stay in Troy, Rochester and the surrounding areas of what? Maybe that is why you call it a cultural wasteland.

I love living in Michigan. I love all 4 seasons. I love that im in the suburbs but can get downtown in about 20 minutes. I love the DIA,Detroit Science Center,Woodward,Downtown as a whole,I love going up north in the summer, laying out on the beach of lake huron, the scenary, the autoshow, the music scene,Wayne State University, getting to windsor in about 30 minutes, the pistons, the tigers,MSU,living in a penisula surround by water, all the casinos, the state theatre. We may be in a one state recession but thats jennifer granholms fault! oh and i forgot boyne, the red wings, all the bars etc etc etc

Annie
i would suggest not judging the entire state based on one county. I've lived in MI my entire life and I've never ran out of beautiful places to visit in this state. Go to one of the Great Lakes, visit a historical town, hike the trails of the Porcupine Mountains, visit a copper mine in Copper Harbor, just do some research and you'll find so much to do.

Mommy to Lauryn and Sydney
Troy and Rochester are great place's I guess you just don't know what to look for!! YOU DON'T LIKE IT HERE DON'T COME BACK!! Plain and simple why B!t@h about it!!

Melissa
Wow you are very closed minded. Oakland county has a lot to offer. If you are not from a area you are obviosuly not going to know the area enough to know where to go and where the good places are.
Michigan is great especially in the summer time, we have the lakes that im sure every michigander has enjoyed. Going to the beach is pretty easy. Canada is close to enjoy so is Chicago. Going up north is wonderful, if you live in the south eastern side of state like me, going up north is like going to a different state. It is so beautiful and full of life.

here is an idea.....don't judge a state by 1 rotting city. Get off you @IY# and explore the state... We have much more better things to offer than Detroit!!

Have you visited Cereal City? how about Mackinac?

Some of the most naturally beautiful scenery around. Of course, if you stay in Troy and Rochester, I can see why you think otherwise. Nothing but traffic jams and concrete jungles in Oakland County.
Cultural wasteland? I'm laughing at your ignorance.

Backpacking is good anywhere up north. I love running back in the state land, my school is right next to a huge plot of nothing but trails. I like that we get all four seasons unlike some other states.
