Let me twist this question. When I was lost in Lancaster, PA and asked for help to get somewhere, the people in that town were rude to me and didn't want to assist.
Rude is rude wherever you go. It's not JUST a New York City issue. Yes, this is a fast paced city where people are always on the rush to get to wherever they have to go. But if you are lost and ask someone for directions, people WILL help. And if a person needs help (such as a person falling on the floor), people will assist. People will hold doors for others.
I have also seen cases whereas people would give up their subway seat for a person that has many packages, a small child, elderly person, pregnant lady, etc.
We're actually very friendly, once you get to know us and understand why things are the way that they are here. |

tough crowd. you got to do noticible things to be noticed and sometimes it becomes more habit than necessity. |

Crowded everyone is trying to go somewhere and people have deadlines to meet. Don't take it personally, if someone needs help there are plenty of good Samaritans, have faith in humanity. |

the crowds, fighting for any space possible whether it be sidewalk or subway, the cost of living, and just the fact that u really cant let ur guard down, ppl will take advantage of it....it is a fast paced city, like bruce banner said, "its the most aggressive city in the world"..... |

I live and lived in New York City my entire life. Not all of us are rude. I go to Monmouth County in New Jersey for the summer- people are the same exact way here, you just dont realize it. Some people can be extremely polite, while others can be extremely rude. Usually it depends on how the other person is greeted and his/her mood. Sometimes I can be nastee to people, and others I can be extremely pollite. It all depends on how they treat me. |

I am a native NYer. I am from Queens originally, but I lived in Manhattan for 7 years. The vast majority of the people I have lived among and worked with are not from NY, and the majority feel that the "rude" title given to NYers is largely undeserved.
I think its just our fast-paced lifestyle that other people mistake as rude, especially on the subway. On a normal day, we simply don't want to be bothered. We just want to get on the subway, read our paper and get to work without talking to anyone. The city is crowded. We are all surrounded by people day and night. Our commutes are often long. As strange as it sounds, sometimes the subway is the few minutes of solitude we have. We just want to get to work or get home unobstructed. Tourists who pull out their subway maps and block the entrance to the subway can make a tired commuter a little crazy and angry! Plus, if a person is grumpy or naturally rude, the circumstances of the city will certainly exacerbate it. But I don't think that NYers are any more or less rude than anyone else.
Like the other posters said, when people are truly in need of assistance there are always a number of people that are willing to help. I think NYer are really, really great in that regard. They are not shy about helping out. 9/11 was a great example of that... |

I am a New Yorker and I am not rude most of the time...Also has to do with your definition of rude.....What might be rude to you may very well be accepted in NYC |

There are over 15 million people in New York State. Are you telling me all of them were rude to you? I think not. It is discrimination to brand an entire state with a negative comment. |

It's a genetic thing I think. Perhaps good home training? Actually not everyone in NY is rude, some are really obnoxious and degrading. Just kidding, it's just the way things have been, an adopted attitude really. |

I think if you lived there you'd get rude too. I find that anywhere in the country if you go out of your way to be friendly to someone they'll appreciate it and return the favor. |
