Why are so many people leaving Detroit for other places to live?

It's not only the crime rate, it's the corrupt Mayor who has several allegations against him, his wife is even living in Florida!!! Corruption runs deep in that city - it has for many years... Jennifer Granholm, the governor of MI has no backbone and will not take any action to better the city! She is aware of the situation and will not make any changes. I think Kwamie Kilpatrick has her in his back pocket too...it's a major shame - jobs are being lost, houses are foreclosing, crime rate is up because that's how some people try to survive... The city has so many winning qualities and a deep history!!! Not to mention an awesome Hockey Team!!!! They have beautiful new stadiums for football, and baseball they have casinos that could potentially generate great revenue and many jobs..... again, where is Granholm in all of this... sitting on her high horse watching it all happen... if you ask me, the Federal Government should jump in and do a complete investigation on the leaders of the state!!! SAD!!! I'm from there and just don't want to go back... it's expensive too!!! Taxes pay Granholm's paycheck, I guess.... write to her and ask her why she hasn't done anything to keep people in her state....
It's also a shame that people don't give it a chance - the great lakes are beautiful, there are many wonderful things about MI - just not Detroit... weather wise, yes, its cold sometimes, but not all the time, last week it was in the 90's and hotter than it is in FL! It doesn't always "stink" people are quick to judge and kick something when it's down... It angers me... instead of finding a solution, they point fingers and say that it's in a state of disrepair... LAZY if you ask me!
EDIT:

If you still live in MI - it's true what we're saying, but again it's a beautiful place!!! it's a shame that it's government can't get it together... WRITE YOUR COUNCIL MEMBERS!
WRITE GRANHOLM!
WRITE KILPATRICK!
WRITE YOUR MAYORS!
WRITE EVERYONE WHO WILL LISTEN!!!
SQUEEKY WHEEL GETS THE GREASE!!!! IT'S TIME FOR CHANGE! THE WORLD NEEDS TO KNOW HOW NICE OF A PLACE MICHIGAN IS! DETROIT CAN BE REHABBED! IT'S A PLACE OF OPPORTUNITY IF SOMEONE WILL GIVE IT A CHANCE!

Dr. Frog can fly!
cause it's kinda miserable

In short, no jobs due to a declining economy.

Probably because of the crime rate there.

The reason i left, was because of lack of jobs (good paying jobs). I couldn't make ends meet on $8.50 an hour.
Also i got fed up with the long cold winters, and the muggy summers.

There are many reasons why People are leaving Detroit for other places across the United States of America. Here are six reasons why people want to leave Detroit;

1. Corrupt Government that FAILS to serve the citizens

2. High Crime Rate and is considered as on the the Most dangerous places to be in America.

3. A Poor Economy with NO JOBS around for anybody to have.

4. Weak Public Transportation around. The only transportation around is gas guzzeling cars that eat up your cash.

5. Detroit has TOO MANY Forecloses and as a result, this brings down property value in Detroit Neighborhoods.

6. Detroit does not have the entertainment you would find in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Cleveland, or Atlanta.

EDIT

Here are some more reasons why so many people are leaving Detroit;

7. Detroit is filled with abandoned and vacant buildings that NEVER get demolished. Detroit has to be the only American City that allows buildings to stay abandoned for more than 20 years before they either get renovated or demolished.

8. Detroit is a city with many excuses. Detroit says it can't demolish vacant homes and buildings because "They Don't Have The Money" and yet they have a mayor who spends thousands and thousands of dollars on himself to live like Donald Trump at taxpayer expense.

9. Downtown Detroit is NOT Cosmopolitian. The city of Detroit is not vibrart with people at all times of the day and night like you would find in Miami, New York, or Dallas.

10. Detroit has a POOR Education System. It has one of the lowest graduation rates in the USA, teachers are more concern about having a paycheck instead of educating the future leaders of Detroit, and the school system misspends money that should be going to the schools.

11. Detroit CANNOT get over the riots that occured there over 41 years ago. Many Cities in the Unites States had riots including Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Birmingham (AL), but all the cities that had riots moved on to better oppotunities and yet, Detroit remained the same and race relations between its citizens changed for the worst.

because it is a DUMP people are lazy mother .- fickers they sit behind the window and watch the kids from the burbs cleaning the sidewalks in the winter and in the summer it is the same cleaning the garbage from the alleys plus there is alot more to bi ... about it

The German
The same reason people are leaving Philadelphia and Cleveland at faster rates than Detroit. The city's are not doing what it takes to retain the residents. The city's do not give people enough to stick around. First you need a solid education system, a decrease in crime and good paying jobs. There are too many hard working citizens that have tried to do something, but it takes a ton of effort and it is easier to move than stay. Everyone can blame the government but it is up to each and every individual out there to make a difference. If people cared more about their neighborhood and had some pride, things would be a lot different. The government should give incentives to people to live in larger cities. That is the only way they can get people to stay. Detroit needs an attitude change and a mayor that is going to do the right thing even if he looks bad. It is urban sprawl at its best. Other cities around the country have finally caught on, but the developments are soon closing up and people will have to go where they can afford which is the "city"

DetroiterGuy
A plethora of reasons: Our city government is inefficient and indifferent to resident's problems and not accountable. We have the worst mayor in US history (debateable, I know). We have one of the worst, if not the worst, public school district of all major US cities. We have a weak tax base, and because of this higher taxes. Many residents are losing their jobs and finding work elsewhere in the Union, along those lines many students are leaving after university for other major US cities, like Chicago, NYC, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Washington DC. Our crime rate is the highest rate among major US cities. We still have a reputation of being a dirty, bombshelled, crime-ridden city.

Mr. "Knowledgeable", I have never heard of anyone having "fun" in Cleveland. We at least have four casinos at our disposal and many nightlife districts within our city. You don't know the city as you don't live here anymore and I bet you never actually lived within the city. Downtown Detroit is becoming more and more vibrant with each passing day. Suburbanites and city-dwellers alike are coming down not just for the games anymore, there are many people out at all times of the day and night having fun. As for numbers 7/8, many of the vacant lots are privately owned and some of those owners are extremely hard to reach. As for number 11, the new generations after the riots, don't remember the riots and therefore don't have the same attitude that the riot generation had, and even then some were kids when the riots happened and were taken out of Detroit against their will by their parents. They still love Detroit, but they new the suburbs were the "best bet" for their children.

Detroit is a good city overall, with many problems that CAN be fixed if our government wasn't so crooked and residents of the city and region can work together. The night is darkest before dawn; and We hope for better things, for they shall rise from the ashes (our city motto).

bleacherbrat34
everybody had hit on the main reasons so I will carry on,,

The school district is one of the worst in the state and the country for Graduation rates (way to many drop outs)

There is no city services,, (no bulk trash pick up, missing street signs, no street light,, (due to high copper theft)

The Ems services are below staff,
The Fire department has old and dated equipment,,
The police department had LAY OFF over 100 during the Superbowl and never rehire them,, most of those police officers had left for jobs out of state (the reason why the benefits and the pay was 100% bbetter.

the city council is a joke,, they act children instead of adults ,, they called each other names and wear prom dresses and crowns to board meetings,,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfhsS-KMFL4

but there is positive the city will become a rural area ,, which means more food for the growing population

Hi, have you BEEN to Detroit? It sucks, it smells, it's got a high crime rate and a crappy football team. Also, you can't escape the fact that it's in MICHIGAN, which is cold and nasty weather-wise.

It's the butt of lots of jokes about what a crappy place it is to live. I hope this helps.

♥ŚњaÑрϊѳ
because they want to..you can only live there for so long.
I lived there for 1 year a a little bit. I didn't like it much.
I was supposed to stay for 2 years but decided to leave yearly.
Some people have different oppinons about different places. Thats why they keep leaving or wouldn't want to live there.
Its dirty..i found
