Why didnt they just fill in New Orleans?

I dont mean to upset anyone but why didnt they just finish filling it up with water. Like make it the lost city of atlantis. It is a waste of time and money to even bother about trying to clean it up.

Okay, your question does make a little bit of sense for a twelve year old, but at the same time you have to realize that for many of the vitums of hurricane Katrina, New Orleans was all that they ever knew. I know that we really don't care if the same thing happened where we are, but others may.

I'll admit that their are some areas of New Orleans that actually are in such ruins that they really should just fill thouse parts up. But what about the Children's Hospital. That was an amazingly great building. And Loyola University and Xaviar University. Xavier is a historically black university. And color really doesn't have much to do with this, but there really is alot of history in that city. Sure, it's also where many slaves were sold and purchased, but it's also where Mardi Gras orignated and the seafood and gumbo and all of the main wonders of the food world!

It's a waste of time and money on certain areas, but for some, it would be even more of a waste to fill it up with water...and call it atlantis. (You know better than saying that online!)

As for the rest of the people on here, i'm positive that many of you lost more than family and your homes, you lost your present, past and possibly your future. But this person is only twelve years old, not fifteen. So please not take it personally what my sister has written. She has a long life to live, and a lot of culture to learn about. oh, and some of you were honestly just plan rude.

I don't really think we'd mind too much if our town got flooded, but then again, we've never had that happen. We still go to the same schools and live in the same community that we did all of our lives.

honestly how would you feel if you suddenly lost everything you've ever know because some random people decided it costs too much to build a good levee system? i can't believe people can be so heartless. we are still people. it is still a city. are you one of those people who think new orleans is one big party? its not. its a great city with history and culture that dates back to the "discovery" of america. to say why not fill it back up? thats BS and you sound ignorant. and you must not know history because serveral other places in the US have also be totally destroyed my hurricanes tordano's earthquakes, whatever do you say just knock their towns down and don't rebuild. its someones HOME. new orleans is where i was born and raised and i will still be totatlly in the city had it not been for katrina. people who think like you make me sick to my stomach because you DON'T think.

2Cute2B4Got
and I do not mean to upset you, but why didn't they just finish filling the rest of your brain with air? Like make it the lost brain of Atlantis. It is a waste of time and money to even educate your ignorance and lack of humanity. New Orleans is a coastal city that is home to many endangered wildlife. New Olreans is rich in history and resources. It is also home to many Americans- get that Americans.

NOLA guy
You don't know what you're talking about.

alyssa
because that would be a waste of time, money, and living space. How bout they fill up u town with water and call it Atlantis.

It's not a wast of time and money to those who had to experience it. That is where they grew up, made memories, it's a piece of history. How would you feel if that happened where you live? Yeah all your stuff would probably be damaged beyond repair, but people need to go back to have closure. They want to rebuild. Become a stronger community. It's sad that you don't think these poor people should have the chance to start over. I hope if this ever happens to you that someone has more compassion then you do!

As Jimmy Buffet said, " New Orleans is the soul of this great nation". It is rich in all forms of art including music, photography and painters. If you have never been there it would be hard to explain. If you let this great city die you are letting part of our country die. I am not from New Orleans or the gulf coast at all and I used to feel the same as alot of you but after seeing it first hand I can honestly say my heart was broken and my mind changed forever. Like someone said earlier if something this horrible happens to those of you who think it should be "Just filled in" I hope others are more sympathetic to you than you have shown here.

i hope someone FILLS YOUR HOME with murky diseased water and you drown slowly and terribly.

savvy.chic
The whole city didn't drown -- just parts of it. It also has a lot of history -- pop culture history, American history, and family history. It's an amazing place although I'm scared to go back. What if it's different?

tallbrian1000
Not all of the city is below sea level so if part of the city was lost the taxes the city collects would go down leaving less money to maintain the rest of the city. New Orleans is also a very old city so a lot would be lost if it was allowed to flood.

I think they should be looking for ways to fill in the low areas with dirt so they are no longer flood prone but again the costs would be huge.

nolajazzyguide
Your question is typical of people who have never been to New Orleans and don't know squat about it. New Orleans is unlike anyplace else in the WHOLE WORLD. As a New Orleans native, I am fed up with negative press and ignorant comments about my native city. New Orleans, as one of the biggest and most important ports in the whole United States, supplies food and oil and gas to a great part of this country. If New Orleans ceased to function, THE WHOLE COUNTRY would suffer, I assure you. America could not and would not survive without New Orleans, and that is FACT, not opinion.
Never mind the fact that the history, culture, architecture, and atmosphere is what cannot be found anywhere else in the country. New Orleans is one of America's truly unique cities, and the residents went thru HELL during and after Hurricane Katrina. If you had been through it yourself, you would not be so callous and judgemental about the existence of New Orleans. It is obvious that you have never suffered thru any kind of natural or man made disaster. How dare you minimize what the people of New Orleans have suffered. What if someone said to you that YOUR CITY or town didn't have the right to exist anymore, what wou ld you say then?

New Orleans Chic
OK LISTEN
new orleans is my home i love it here the music , food culture ,its people and its rythem.......
how can you say just fill it in its our home its full of memories and its our life ..........
how would you like it if we told you your past, childhood and your life didnt matter.......?
well thats exactly what you are telling us....
new orleans is the best city ever.
AND THATS COMMING FROM A 15 YEAR OLD........

RedneckBarn
Why do you people still post these questions? I mean, after almost two years, you're still saying the same old crap.

Do you not realize how important of a port the city of New Orleans is? If you got rid of the city, you'd be increasing the cost of almost every consumer good from here to St. Paul Minnesota.

Why did we spend all of that money rebuilding San Francisco? Do people not realize that a fault line runs right through it? Millions more lives and dollars will be lost. We should just cut bait now.

Do people not realize what a big target for terrorists NYC is? September 11th should have made everyone realize they should get the heck out of there.

Do you not realize how idiotic you sound when you make comments like the ones you've made here? Not only idiotic, but how offensive you're being as well? What if I made some similar comments about your home? About how we should get rid of it, burn it to the ground, or whatever?

bcurius
Listen beacause if you do that taht means other parishes will lose everything even homes. St. Charles parish, Jefferson Parsih, Orleans Parish and others. So that would just realy make everybody lose everything

Get it
Got it

New Orleans is a beautiful old town. Sure there are a lot of ruins there now but if you have never been you need to visit. Besides, how would you like it if they decided to 'just fill in your town?'

PEGGY S
Every area of the country has its problems. There are tornados, landslide, earthquakes, snow, and floods in other places. Why would you determine that only New Orleans is not worth saving? Better check your information before rendering any area of this country useless. You will find that the New Orleans area contributes a lot more to this country than you think.

Heads up!

To prevent disease and contaminated water. I agree some areas should not be rebuilt in case of future flooding which is inevitable in the low lying areas of the city.

Too many politicians want a share of your money, so the simple thing to do is keep it as is and say they are doing something without thanking you for your donation.

The biggest mistake was to build most of the city in an area below sea level and keep the water out with levees. As a result the natural sedimentation process was stopped and the city slowly began to sink. Letting the water back in carefully selected areas will help restore the shoreline and surrounding marshlands, giving more protection from storms in the future.

the french quarter area did not flood as it is on a ridge higher than the rest of the city. they should have saved that and green space the rest of new orleans. the government is wasting money to fix up the city and pay people that did not have insurance

?
they want them to rebuild so they can take out more incuranse and get those funds and denie the storm inc. pay outs.

jabsgirl
I wish they would too. Things will never be the go back to the way they were, so they should just stop wasting money on cleaning it up and use that money on more important things.
