I recently went to New York and I thought the locals was very friendly. I received help from total strangers with directions, how best to use the subway system, places that I should make sure to visit, the best times to see certain attractions, etc.
I met very few rude people in New York. I'm from the south, and we pride ourselves on our "southern hospitality", but the welcome and friendliness displayed by New Yorkers would put many large southern cities to shame. |

Actually, the average New Yorker loves tourists. They create jobs and bring money into the city. They remind New Yorkers that they live in one of the greatest cities on Earth...
Without out-of-towners, many/most of New York's attractions, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History, would have to close.
If a tourist is lost and catches a New Yorker when they're not in a rush, the average New Yorker will be glad to help the tourist.
What they don't like is tourists who may "get in the way" of their activities, such as stopping in the middle of the sidewalk to look up at a building, or holding up the line to get into the subway. |

They don't. My wife and I just visited New York and many of the people were gracious and polite, and no one was rude. |

I wouldn't say all new yorkers hate tourists. That's silly.
What I hate is trying to walk through Times Square when several hundred people are going turtle slow and taking pictures. |

New Yorkers are great! I was once accused of being a New Yorker because of my sarcastic nature. I took it as a huge compliment!
New Yorkers aren't in NYC to take photos and attend Broadway shows. They are there to work and live. Tourists get in the way. It gets annoying.
However, tourists bring in big bucks for NYC. So, I'm guessing they really don't HATE tourists. |

I like them, as long as they don't inconvenience me.
They remind me how lucky I am to live in one of the greatest cities in the world; I feel flattered when I see them taking pictures of things in my neighborhood that I see everyday.
But if I'm late for work, and a group of people are blocking my way on the stairs to the train, I get a little annoyed.
Just remember that although you're on vacation, millions of people are living their day-to-day lives here. If you don't inconvience me, I might even stop and help you with directions. |

New Yorkers dont hate tourists, although we do pretty much anything to avoid going into the touristy areas. I mean its quite annoying when you're trying to get to work on time and people are stopping in front of you on a busy and very crowded sidewalk to take pictures of stuff that we, admittedly, take for granted. |

I can understand why New Yorkers have issues with tourists. I was totally developing a "New York" attitude my first time there back in December. I was trying to walk through Times Square towards Central Park area and the other tourists would just stop dead in their tracks right in front of me. That was so annoying. I was trying to keep up my pace with the locals and then BAM - tourist. At least when I would stop for a few my 2nd time in NYC, I would get off to the side out of everyone's way to take a picture. I'm sure I annoyed someone still, but I was trying to be conscientious of others around me at least.
But I don't think New Yorkers hate tourists - after all, if all tourists stopped coming to NYC, that would be very bad for the economy. Just be respectful of the city you are visiting and you'll be fine. |

They insist on eating at places like the Olive Garden when Little Italy is at their fingertips. They walk slow and get it in the way. They take pictures of buildings. They don't keep the line moving at the deli and can't follow instructions. They're like aliens, but I don't hate them. Their big @sses are part of the scenery. |

I agree with Don W.
I used to be tourist when I first moved here in 1996.
Everywhere in NY, when tourist gets lost, people who not in hurry loves to help out tourist.
I am consider NYers because I know my way around the city and county, well as NJ like NY Times indicated me.
One time, when I went to Stamford, CT and passenger who is not in hurry help me find bus stop for I-bus return to White Plains. |

New Yorkers get a bad rap. If you're treated rudely on the street, more often than not it's someone from New Jersey, Long Island, or Upstate.
There are always exceptions, but true New Yorkers (even the transplants that love the city) are some of the friendliest people in the US. We just don't look at people on the streets - it's not being rude, it's just the sidewalks are crap and there's too much to pay attention to. |
