Why do hotels make you check out at 11 am?

It dosen't really make sense. Other guests checking in for that day, and future guests of your room will not be checking in untill 4pm. Does it really take them over 3 hours to clean a room and prep it for the next guests? What's the reason for it?
Additional Details
Yes they do have to clean all the other rooms, but not everyone is checking out on the same day. Im pretty sure the rooms that have just been vacated are put on priority or something.

One has to remember that the average hotel has about 200 rooms, and about 12 on each floor and 2 employees to completely clean each room that will have a new guest coming to check in. Now at home we just make the bed. But in a hotel every inch has to be cleaned, polished, change all linens, etc....... So a 4 hour window is sometimes not enough time, but for the most part 4 hours is good. Think about this.....would you want to stay in a hotel room that has used bed sheets, towels, dirty glass wear......not me!!!

they have to clean the rooms and make sure there is no damage to the room and if it needs extra attention they will have it and there are usually more than one room to clean in a day and not that many employees so it give the employees time to do all the rooms before the room is needed.

nwest1999
Because most hotels have more than just one room and it does take a long time to clean the rooms in between guests.

i guess they need lots of time to clean all the rooms...the question is why do you only get an extra hour when you ask for late check out?

kadel
They have to guarantee that all the rooms will be ready for 4 PM and some people come in earlier and want a room at 2. If you are a member of their club you can sometimes arrange for a late check out by asking the desk.

hillmonkey2001
Its not that it takes 3 hours to clean 1 room....it takes 3 hours to clean many rooms.

Think about it--20 people check out at 11 or a little later...then a maid is assigned those rooms and must have them ready in 3 hours. Maids have to clean more than one room on their shift. Typically they clean 12-15 rooms...more if they are quicker...

So they can have the room ready for the next guests when they check-in.

tonalc1
They have to clean all the rooms. Their schedule isn't changed so that a check-in room gets cleaned earlier than the others.

Better hotels will sometimes allow an "early check in"; or they let you store your bags there until the room is ready.

Its a stupid policy that all hotels abide by.

Hotels try to keep the rooms as full as possible - at least 80%. Lot's of people check in early too.

J.D.
It's not just your room that has to be cleaned... it's all the others too in preparation for the next round of guests.
Too confusing regarding which rooms have been cleaned and which ones still need it. So, they start on one end and work their way down the hall.

CALLIE
since there are so many rooms to clean, they want to be sure that all the rooms are ready for occupation with the staff they have on hand to service them

jopuppy
because they make me check in at 4 after they alreday 'cleaned' every room.

tkron31
It's because they need to clean and inspect the rooms. And they have a limited housekeeping staff-maybe one for every 5-6 rooms or so. If you've ever cleaned, swept, dusted, and mopped a room that has just been vacated and it needs to meet high inspection standards, you know how long it takes.

Boy_Crazy
I don't know.

bribri
to clean all of the rooms..... laundry etc

I do believe it is for that very reason. Remember they are not only cleaning your room but every other room. That takes time.
