Why do people move to Las Vegas? |
I know that people can gamble and win money but there is so much pollution, crime, homeless people, children get shot getting off of school busses, the educational services suck, their is so much poverty, the mayor was a lawyer for a mobster, drunks everywhere you look, they sell cigarettes and alcohol to minors (don't say they don't, it may be illegal but its done all the time), shootings on the strip.!!!!! What is wrong with these people that move here. It's crazy!!
I understand that people wanna have a good time but, I'd say the one thing that people come with and leave here is their LOOSE money. They constantly lose their money in slots!!! But oh well..
What's your opinion??? |

Most people who move to Vegas DO NOT frequent the Strip at all. Kids get shot getting off a school but or mall customers getting shot in Omaha or chruch goers getting shot in Colorado; what the hell is the difference?
You think Vegas has a lot of homeless people the go to San Francisco and see how many homeless people per capita that place has.
Poverty? Ever been to Mississippi, Arkansas, the Central Valley in CA, Texas, ect... Poverty is everywhere and no worse in Vegas than anywhere else. Thye are not selling cigaretttes or alcohol to minors anymore so that elsewhere. I personally know people in Vegas and before they turned 21 they didn't have any easier of a chance getting booze than here in CA, which is strict.
People don't move to Vegas to "have a good time". They move their for jobs, cheaper housing, and opporuntities. Vegas is the best and easiest place to start a new business.
Like all major tourist destinations, there are two sides to a city. The one tourists see and the ones the locals see.
You sound like some clueless tourist who doesn't know a damn thing about Vegas besides what they see on the strip. Stop being so ignorant and learn some things before you start some rant about a place you obviously know little about.
Go spend a week in Summerlin or Henderson then see if you have the same thoughts. |

You're only talking about the strip, and exaggerating outrageously. There are very nice "normal" suburbs in Las Vegas, as well as schools, shopping centers, and recreation that has nothing to do with sex, gambling or drinking. You obviously have never been to anywhere in Vegas besides the strip, which is a very small area of the city. |

That happens in New York, LA, Detroit, Miami, and pretty much anywhere else - in one variation or another. What makes Vegas any different in that aspect?
I am moving to Vegas because New York SUCKS. Real Estate is $296 a square foot, I lose a quarter of my pay to taxes, I pay $300 a month to put gas in my car, and the tolls I pay every day on my commute to work will be going up 20% over the next 18 months. College tuition for the nearest colleges to me is more than I make a year, yet I make too much money to qualify for any financial aid. The highest temperature this week is going to be 36 degrees. (In July it will be 90 degrees with 100% humidity, which makes it like a sauna and hard to breathe. You work up a full sweat putting on your socks.) One of our senators is a floundering phony b*tch who has done NOTHING but run for President. (Give me a former mob lawyer any day. At least they get things done.) |

Well my opinion is that stuff happens everywhere...not just in Las Vegas. People may move there for a new career or b/c they like the weather there...there are many reasons they move there. You can take a risk when moving to any state. I don't know where you live or how old you are, but you seem very naive and you haven't been out in the world much. |

people move to vegas for the jobs, low taxes, cheap housing, good year round weather, outdoor adventure on their doorstep like red rock canyon, lake mead etc, nightlife.
pollution in las vegas has gone down dramatically since 1994 despite the population doubling in that time
many parts of the las vegas valley are virtually crime free like boulder, henderson etc
there is homeless people in every big city in the world, london, rome, paris, hong kong, new york, los angeles
children get shot getting off of school busses, this happened once.
the educational services suck, i cannot debate this either way
mayor was a lawyer for a mobster?? Well someone has to represent the bad guy, mass murderers have lawyers too, the mayor has no power in many parts of the city anyway and that includes the strip.
drunks everywhere??? i see a few, no more than anywhere else and pretty good considering alcohol is available 24/7
they sell cigarettes and alcohol to minors?? who is they?? this happens everywhere across the world, some of my friends started smoking at 8 or 9 and i was born 5,000 miles from las vegas.
Shooting on the strip, again a one-off occurrence by a mad-man, this happens when guns are sold legally to crazy people |

I lived in Vegas for 20 years and built up a good construction business. There 's no more crime there than anywhere else.
It was good to me, we made good money, more people move there with dreams of grandure then reality, they find out the raods are not made of gold. You have to make them that way.
The prices have recently taken a side to other states now and Vegas is know different then anywhere else. |

Vegas has a normal city away from the Strip and from I hear on the news Vegas is not the only city with problems with students and shooting, etc.
It is illegal to sell tobacco and cigs to minors, and that happens in every state like UT. The homeless come here because of the warm weather in the summer and the better weather most of the winter compared to the east and midwest; thinking they will find easy handouts (ha).
Educational services are normal, so ignore those press releases. The shootings on the Strip are visitors not locals and they happen in NY and FL, etc.
People move here because they think they can get rich quick and leave just as fast once they lose their money and find no one will pay the bills for them.
People move here because there is a very low unemployment with the construction industry and ancillary businesses. People move here because they think they can just walk in and have a job at a casino, a job that pays well like dealing, but dealers have to go to school and work their way up from to the best casino and best shift.
So our major was supposedly helping the mob. Well, when the mob was here we had less crime, no gang activity, etc. I say bring back the mob!!!
So you don't like my city. GOOD. Stay where you are and that is one less person moving here at a rate of more than 4,000 people a month. |

I'm not too sure why. I've lived here 20 years out of 25, and I still question why my parents moved us here. I can't answer why I haven't left either.... |

Actually, I lived in Las Vegas for 4 years. The only reason I left is because my family all still lived back in MN, where I have returned. I missed my family like crazy and with my aunt and grandmother as sick as they are, I felt it was in the best interest of everyone involved if I moved back.
I cannot say anything about the educational system since I never went through it. As far as shootings and that goes, that happens more in Minneapolis on a regular basis now a day than it does in Las Vegas! North Las Vegas is a high crime rate area, but most people are not looking to move into that area. The old mayor, years ago, of my hometown- Litchfield, MN was caught soliciting for sex with minor boys!!! Even your lesser known communities have their problems!
Plus, I saw a lot more open use of methamphetamine in my little city of Litchfield- population roughly 7000 than I ever saw in Las Vegas. Sure, it happens, but people are not as open about it or pushing it to the young teens as much as I noticed in my hometown. We didn't have two drug counselors in the high school for no reason!
People move to Las Vegas for far more than the gambling opportunities. Las Vegas is a booming industry. Those who have a degree in business would be wise to move to Las Vegas because they have an excellent chance of moving high up the ladder and pay scale. Hotel management, travel and tourism is not only a career with high salary, the people you meet from all over the world and the fun you can have with this job make it very rewarding.
Las Vegas has more than meets the eye! You have to actually spend some time in Las Vegas away from the strip and in the actual community setting to understand what it is that draws people in. Only then can you appreciate what Las Vegas really has to offer. |

Actually, you can get very well educated in Las Vegas, Nevada. I know this because my cousins live in Las Vegas. Everywhere sells cigarettes to minors. SO THERE YOU GO!!!!!!!! |

Las Vegas is turning into little LA with the urban problems resulting from 1000 failies a day moving in. That figure is NOT an exaggeration. Clark County is one of the top three fastest growing US counties every year for the last 15.
This used to be a paradise but it's not now. You have to be rich already to make it. Most of my friends have to have two jobs to make it. |
