Why do people say DON'T MESS WITH "TEXAS"?

It started as part of an anti littering campaign. What it originally meant was if you litter (and "mess with Texas"), you will be royally fined.

Now I think people just still say it to show state pride.

That was a slogan that texas used to help keep people from littering. I liked it. Really cool stickers and signs! I love Texas. I'm from Louisiana and love it here too.

DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS is the slogan you see on highway anti-liter signs. It has nothing to do with being strong, rough, big, retarded, or changing things as some have suggested. There are lots and lots of nice people here.
I wish "dan the man" would come back and give us another try so he could meet some of us in the Dallas area. Y'all give us a break! --- that's another sign you'll see on our highways, where road construction is going on. Self explanatory.

It has to do with "Don't litter" or we will.........You can fill in the blank or I can for you and it ain't nice!!!!! Just don't litter in our state.

I think it just got started somehow as a slogan because it rhymes and it is a catchy phrase. I think it means don't talk badly about Texas around Texans. Or it may mean don't mess with as in - don't change Texas it is fine the way it is.

Biggest state in the United States. It used to below to Mexico but it was annexed in 1845. It were all them cowboys are. It also where the Houston Rodeo takes place! Yeeeaaahhh Doooggyy!

cause people in texas are very proud of being from / living in texas. i call it aggravating. unfortunately, 90 percent of the people i have ever met that have come from texas i have disliked adn the only city ive liked there is san antonio
