Why do residents of Detroit deny the truth?

I've looked at the answers to the questions on this category and it makes me laugh when I see answers like "come on over to Detroit, it's a great city, it's not like what people say it is".

What a load of BS. I grew up in Detroit but moved out when I was 17 (my parents moved to Atlanta because of their work) and I haven't been back in a long time, but we went back to visit last week and the city is still a living hell. There isn't a lot of other cities that have ENTIRE neighborhoods of abandoned/burnt down homes, factories, and stores right near the downtown business area. Sure every city has it's bad areas, but not as bad as Detroit.

Why can't residents of Detroit admit that the city IS bad and has some major problems? Stop trying to paint a perfect picture of Detroit when the truth is this city is still a sad place.
Additional Details
By the way, I'm not exactly talking about the downtown area such as Hart Plaza ... sure it's ok there, but I'm talking about what's just beyond that area.

What are you talking about? Like you say, you haven't been back in ages. And when you visited you obviously didn't really spend time checking the place out or you would know the truth. I live in Toledo and I go to Detroit several times a year. Detroit is awesome now!! Downtown Detroit is fantastic. They have festivals that bring lots of people there. Greektown is fantastic. The casinos bring in lots of people. The Detroit International Jazz Festival, for example is just one of the many great things that goes on in Detroit.

Toledo is so much worse than Detroit in my opinion. Down here, they gate off the festivals and have all kinds of security and they claim that it's because of the violence. But in Detroit they have free festivals in Hart Plaza and they go for several city blocks. There are a few cops, but not as many as we have down here. I have never seen one incidence of violence erupt up there at a festival. Several thousand people enjoy themselves and behave themselves and buy things from the vendors and listen to the fabulous music. Down here just a couple thousand people are in an enclosed area with plenty of cops watching and they have to pay to get in and they still act like fools. I'd rather go to Detroit any day.
Go on back to Atlanta. Nobody cares. I'm moving out to California in two years for the weather. And I won't miss Toledo one bit. But I gotta admit, I'll miss the fesitvals, the shopping, Greektown, the jazz, and a lot of other fun I have up in Detroit.

I agree and disagree with you.

Disagree- There are nasty bits to every large city. There are bad neighborhoods, suburbs you drive around, and crime, crime, crime.

I have been to Atlanta, and it was not all magnolias and boys choirs. And I will be honest that I would feel safer in Detroit at night then in Miami.

And I would not consider any place home to Pizza Papalis a living hell.

Agree- Even though certain areas have been fixed up, the city still has that desolate industrial wasteland feel to it. When in Chicago, I was struck that for every burned or boarded house I saw, someone was fixing up a house.

Detroit is still a sad place. It is sad because it is not the big problem it is made out to be- but a symptom of the problems of our state. Michigan is sick, and Detroit is the biggest and best example of that.

Whenever someone tries to divert some money to fix things, there is a an inevitable debate about 'wasting money' on Detroit. They get screwed on water service, on electricity, on road money, on education.

The fastest way to see a Michigan resident go pale is to talk about what their taxes are doing for Detroit. Because no one who lives outside of the city wants to do a damned thing for it.

I think on some level that most people realize that Detroit is not the problem, rather Michigan, and that is why they gush over the casinos and the night life and the shiny entertainments for people who live outside the city.

I doubt people are painting Detroit into a Utopian Paradise. The problems stem from Michigan's struggling economy. We're 50th in Growth. The Big 3 are hurting which affects everyone from the suppliers on down. Detroit is the Motor City and when the Big 3 have financial problems, Detroit's feel those problems tenfold.

Plus, the police cuts have done nothing to make the city safer all the while Kwame, the Pimp Mayor is steadily shaving money from the city with extravagant trips, etc.

Don't blame the residents entirely. There's more to this problem that meets the eye.

Detroit got a bad name in the mid 60,s or so. Much better now. When a city has a bad area they all look the same. Some people living in another city thing the bad areas of Detroit are nicer than where they live now.The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence.Someone said that once!

slam_92
We moved from Detroit a few years backs. four to be exact. The city's really gone bad. A weak economy, and everybody losing their jobs after the factories shut down. I wouldn't blame 'em for trying to get new people and new buisnesses in.

Actuall y Detroit is a good city. If you actually lived here u would know what's up. Yeah Detroit may have a lot of crime and lots of abandoned houses and in debt, but guess what it is a good place for me and I'm not going nowhere.

BooHoo. All I got to say is, don't smile at us when you get tired of Salt Water and your reservoirs go dry.

Detroit is a great city with some of the best geographic and building designs world wide. Detroit will be home to the biggest Loan Giant in the World by 2010. Detroit has some of the best and unique products and ways around. We have some of the best Sports Teams and Athletes around.

Every city has it's bad parts, but we also have good parts like every other city.

It's just plain STUPID to base your opinion on a city from what the Retard Media says over residents that actually live there.

Trust me, I've been down south in Atlanta and it's not much down there I saw that was any better.

The City of Detroit isn't a sight to behold but the suburbs are a different story.

It amuses me that someone (and its not just you) who lives nowhere near Detroit nor has any need or desire to live here or visit cares so much about the state of the city or its residents. Your home is what you make it. The people who live here have a soft spot for the city and can see the revitalization happening downtown. We believe it will only get better. Small steps, honey. Apparently you missed the gorgeous new baseball and football stadiums; the upscale lofts right on Woodward; the new businesses popping up every day. The three casinos are growing and in the process of building hotels attached to them. I go downtown often, and on a weekend night it is jumping. So much so sometimes it is hard to find a parking spot. Your elitist attitude toward the city is ridiculous and as far as I'm concerned, stay out. The last thing Detroit needs is another naysayer.

G Detroit
I could not disagree with you more. Detroit has a ton of character and yes it is a beautiful city, in its own way. I have lived in some of the most spectacular cities in my life and I would rank Detroit right up there. Just because you and everybody else left doesn’t mean that you should dog the people that have stayed and attempted to create a city that is the talk of the Midwest much like it was 100 years ago.

You stay in one place long enough and you become that place. Please understand that this is a resilient area that will not lay down because it has had some troubles. Everything is cyclical and you will one day remember that you said this about the GREAT CITY OF DETROIT.

1. To the individual who believes there is little to no violence at festivals in Detroit: I was at the fireworks two years ago and twenty yards in front of me three people were gunned down. I was at another festival (sometime in the summer, don't remember which one, there was Barbeque though) and a huge gang brawl broke out in front of me... don't tell me there's no violence at these festivals. And you were right about one thing, they are WAY under policed.
2. Don't come to a forum about Detroit, aimed at Detroit residence and knock DOMESTIC CARS! Our domestics are built WAY tougher than these plastic foreign cars. You must be thinking of Fords. j/k
3. To answer your question: I think sometimes people have respect and love for their city no matter what. It's like parents. You can be angry with your parents/siblings/best friends all you want, but as soon as someone else knocks your loved one, you jump on the defensive. People deny that Detroit is a bad place because in many instances (not all) people's preconceived notions about the city are to an extreme.

I agree with this question. With bad leadership and denial, no growth or development will follow.
I was born and raised there, I can say, that over the years Detroit has died a slow and painful death.
It would take decades to bring it back to life. Dennis Archer started to do that, but the blacks which is the majority were against him, they felt as though he was too whitewashed. I think thats exactly what Detroit needs, is to get rid of the ghetto mayors, the ghetto city workers and fnd someone more mainstream. FYI: Domestic cars are a piece of crap, and thats the true fact as to why the major car companies are at a loss for profits, people prefer foreign for their reputation as being good cars.

I know what you are talking about my husband is from southwest detroit and I moved in with him for a few months last year before we got married he totally thought it was heaven. We moved away last fall, and when we go back to visit more and more my hubby realizes why I hated Detroit so much. Detroit has a face only a born and bred resident can love, I wish the city much luck but severly doubt that it will get much better anytime soon.

I just wonder if Detroit will ever be a prosperous city again like it was during the heyday of the auto industry. It has the worst poverty I have ever seen in the whole country.

LizzyLuise
I used to live in Detroit for work.

=)

Mr.B
I live in a suburb of Detroit. And I agree with you Detroit has some major issues that need to be dealt with. I am moving to Chicago, becuase I am tired of the poverty, the poor economy, and the fact that there is nothing to do. I feel there are no opportunities in Detroit, and I have seen no improvement in the economy.

Jay Dub
Detroit will never thrive as long as it is run by criminals and thugs. The taliban is run better than Detroit. I live in the suburbs of Detroit. Detroit is an embarassment to Michigan and the country. It deserves everything it get's as long as they keep re-electing the "hip hop mayor" instead of someone with an ounce of respect. I always wonder if the people who run Detroit have ever been to other cities. Chicago is a 5 hour drive away . . . but a world apart. Same thing with Toronto. Hello ????? What a joke !!!

I definitely agree with you. I have a few friends in Detroit, and I try to avoid going there to visit, because it is just awful. I live right on Lake Michigan, and everywhere I go I am surrounded by water, other beautiful scenery, and smiling faces- none of which I can get in Detroit.

I grew up in Detroit and seriously couldn't wait to get out.

My mom still lives in Grosse Pointe, and tells me she sees some improvement in a few areas downtown.

At the same time, she tells me that the economy has gone into the toilet. Even houses in the suburbs aren't selling.

Companies continue to abandon the city.

I know that after 30+ years of corruption with Mayor Young there wasn't much left to work with, yet Mayor Archer was making major headway in reviving the city. Unfortunately he left, and people of Detroit voted in Kwame, who is just as corrupt as Young was, but lacks Young's ability to keep most of it from public view.

Detroit is nothing more than a rotting husk, with the corrupt politicians bickering over what scraps remain, while the rest of the city continues to reach new lows.

Peder S
Perhaps you should look at the cause of the degradation and run down neighborhoods. The poor choices of the big American Auto Makers making vehicles that fall apart, crappy warranties, poor gas mileage. Not reading the signs, pushing the big gas guzzlers and big prices. Too expensive, they layed off masses of workers. The once good money gone, the economy of much of America is in Shambles.

You want things better. Start with protecting the borders. Arrest detain and put in work farms these illegals that want to work in the USA, keep the money they would have earned make them work off their sentences, stop educating them and their young. Quit giving citizenship to their offspring because they were born in the USA, and letting them stay because we don't want to break up their families. The economy so sucks... Get the ILLEGALS OUT!

mao ying
Because for most of them, that is all they know...they havent yet seen the "light"

I agree with you. My husband was born and raised detriot but he thinks the city sucks.
