They're called fire escapes. They're used to get out of your building in case it caught on fire and you weren't able to get down the stairs inside the building like you normally would. |

These are fire escapes. In London most fire escapes are internal, so you don't see them, although you do see the external metal kind sometimes, especially in older buildings which have had fire escapes added after their original construction. |
