It's a stereotype based on the outer borough mentality; tough looks, New Yawk accent and streetwise mentality....yes, portrayed in mob movies such as "Goodfellas" and TV shows such as "The Sopranos".
Being a Bronx guy myself, the mentality is something that I admire because in one way, I can turn on that "edge" if I need be in terms of a situation but on the other side of it, when people really get to know who I am, they can tell I'm really a "puppy dog". But for an out of stater hearing someone speak like that when they go to areas like the Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island based on the stereotypes, I can see where they would think in one way or another that we're "connected".
Though I have heard tough guys in Boston talking with their New England accent and while I don't see the intimidation, I could see where others might be as well. |
