Large cities like Chicago have "neighborhoods" with different names, but cities are not divided into towns. |

its easier to maintain balance in govt. look back in history why do most powerful empires like incas, aztecs, roman empire, decline,.. they cant control all their conquered territory |

Because it's a huge country and is best governed by the people who live in their small areas or towns or cities. I don't think someone in government 1500 miles away can decide if my street needs a stop sign to protect a deaf child who lives nearby. |

Because it's more easy to deal with certain problems. Lets say there were no little town or city, but only states. For every problem that state had and remember a state is really big place they would have to go to the State council and the state council would have to deal with 50,000 people every day. Plus on that the towns people would have to elect someone to go see the State council and more then likely would live in the middle of the state. So lets say you lived on the out skirts of the state. You would have to travel a very long distance just to get your problem resolved, and it also could be denied, but instead of doing all that. The United States make states, cities, and towns. So that if a town has a problem then they can have a town meeting with the major. Then that major can go to City council, then that city council can consider it and take it to state, and after states review it if they think there is need for a change then the state can send the bill to congress, which congress will review it and if they agree then they send it to the president. To review and that is how a bill is made. Which is much more easier than dealing with 101 billion problems. All at once when your only one man. |

I don't know of any cities that have little towns in them. Are you referring to NYC, with the different areas called Tribeca, SOHO, Greenwich Village, Chelsea, China Town, etc.? They aren't little towns -- they are simply different sections of the city of NY, and they aren't unnecessary either, because the city is so big, this allows people to recognize the area you're referring to. |

They aren't unnecessary, what about the big cities, that equivalent to 5 average sized cities :D. |

I think all the little towns came first and were later Incorporated into the bigger city. |

I don't know, but I think it might have to do with help for directions. It makes areas smaller, so it's easier to find them on a map, or if you ask for directions. |

You know thats a great question. I would say it is residual left over drawn lines from the time when they were still fighting to become a state, and those are what became of the bloody battles that were fought, and decided upon, as to save lives and prevent more blood shed. They've stuck.. |

Usually the little towns were there first and as the cities grew the towns got incorporated into the city. |

The answer is simple, because in the old days esp in the West a horse could only be ridden about 30 miles a day and the had to stop. So little towns are 30 miles apart still. Also farms need supplies and that is how the little towns survive today. |
