Las Vegas is built on excess. Too much booze, too many drugs, too much sex, too many flashy lights, too much money, etc. The mentality of excess, however, is often curtailed by a person's knowledge that they will be condemned anywhere else for such behavior. If what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas then nobody will ever know what they've done, and they will not be judged for their excessive behavior. They are free to enjoy Las Vegas in the spirit in which it's meant to be enjoyed. Vegas becomes a release not only from your own inhibitions but the judgemental attitudes of society. If people DID talk about Vegas then nobody would be going half as crazy, and Vegas wouldn't be making near as much money. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas so that you have a better time, and "they" make more money.

are you serious? it's an advertising campaign, means you can be as bad as you want in Vegas, and nobody will know....yeah right.

Cause loads of bad things happen there most people wouldn't do anywhere else.
Sex, drugs, hookers etc.

Hmmm-have you ever been there?? You must go to know!

Since Las Vegas is basically the party capital of the world, young adults may often do things that, at home, they would never think of doing. Drinking, strip clubs, and hookers are good (obvious) examples.

People are inclined to do things in Vegas that they dont do anywhere else. A lot of the things you'd like to forget. So-they say what you do while you're in Vegas will stay there, and wont come back to haunt us. At least that's what we hope.

It's a marketing slogan used by the advertising firm for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors' Authority. And the irony of putting forth an image of excess is that they lifted it, in part, from Alcoholics Anonymous. At the beginning of every AA meeting is this warning: "What happens in this room, stays in this room". LOL!

Because Vegas has been named sin city, so it's given the stigma that even if you are the most pious, law-abiding, pure person if you go to Vegas you can go wild in Sin City, because in it's a land of temptation where you're expected to go and sin (overindulge...etc), and then go back to wherever you came from and you'll be just fine.

I particularly don't believe this to be true, but hey, people believe it.

because vegas is known for alot of second marriages and scandals and all things against the law
actually las vegas was founded by mobsters who wanted to retire

its basically a city where all things go
and nothing leaves

Vegas had tried and failed to market itself as a family destination. You can see the evidence of this everywhere from the roller coaster to the pirate show.

It needed a new, catchy, edgy image so it could keep bringing tourists in. A marketing team (R&R partners ) was hired and they came up with the slogan which was wildly successful.

My question back to y'all - does a marketing slogan make it so?

Tati
It is likely that people say "what happens in vegas, stays in vegas" because they either intend to do something immoral and unacceptable to society or have done something in vegas that qualifies as something you dont want others to know. When people are in a different setting from their usual they tend to get more bold or willing to do things they normally wouldnt. Especially because they expect that people they know wont find out. So then what you did in Vegas becomes a secret.

alanfromsocal
It was an advertising slogan for Las Vegas. From what I've seen, what happens in Vegas gets broadcast on national TV. Anyway, the only things I know of that I can do in Las Vegas that I can't do at home in California is buy liquor between 2-6 a.m. and call a brothel to come pick me up in a limo and take me there. BTW, contrary to what some believe, and some may have implied in here, prostitution is illegal in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas.

they say that b/c usually ppl let their morals go in vegas

just for the heck of it, a little splurge time to have fun

they think that saying that phrase gives them permission to do so

so that those times of the unspeakable will "stay in vegas" and not follow them back home

SmartGuy LV
Because people are usually drunk and can't remember what they did anyway.
