Why does everyone always want to live in CA?

I don't get it. Now I was born and raised here and I just can't understand why so many people are so infatuated with CA. As much as I've loved living and growing up here I can't think of many places that would be worse to move to right now than here in CA. The economy is coming apart at the seems. Cost of living keeps going up and wages keep going down while jobs are slashed all over the state.

Do people really think that CA is like what they see on tv? Do they believe that the only way that can make any of their dreams come true is to be in the Golden State?

I'm not bashing anyone I'm just curious why California is where so many people want to go - especially with the way so many things are struggling here (housing, jobs, food, immigration, population surplus, gas, utilities).
Additional Details
Note: I wasn't sure where else to put this. This section seemed like a good place, since when people do move to CA it's to the southern area.

I agree with you.
I hate California, all the people are stuck-up and bitchy.
High in crime.
Low wage.
Lots of hobos.
All the economy is messed up and I guess people want
to live here because they think that Beverly Hills is everywhere.
People need brains.
I've been wanting to move somewhere like Montana.
Seems "nicer".

1.i'm born here.
2.my grandpa came to virginia to study, and his daugher(my aunt) got a job offer in california, so everyone moved there with her.
3.it's close to mexico
4.great weather(although i like the cold better)
5.it's the most diverse state
6.people are ignorant, and only watch movies about california and watch entertainment.
7.other places are worse off than us(it's true)
8.i love it here :]

I've been in LA a long time (nearly 40 years now), but I was raised in NY and PA, and I go back there frequently enough to stay up with all.

There's a lot here that those places just don't have. We are multicultural and celebrate it in our wonderful mixed cuisine. Our economy is not bad like other places. We as a people here are open-minded in many ways.

Yes, it's expensive here and traffic is a big challenge, but our weather is largely wonderful. It's crowded, too, and it's not like the TV portrays it, so more people come in seeking that fantasy world.

In fact, my only lament is that I just wish it were closer to my family, who are all on the East Coast.

So there's a lot to appreciate here. Maybe you should take a January tour of Detroit, Flint, Cleveland, Buffalo, and a few cities like that to remind yourself why they all flock here. Brrr, I shiver just to imagine it! :)

I think it's still viewed as "the promised land" for a lot of people from places like Michigan, Illinois, and Minnesota - the snow belt. Sure, TV is part of it. And, frankly, for a long time, California was a great deal in comparison. I think it's only recently that California has become *so* overcrowded and expensive that the transplants are overflowing into states like Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico, where things remain less expensive.

the same reason why they wanna move to FL.because they think it looks like what they see on t.v.

I lived in So.Cal for 40 years, and moved north of Dallas, Texas over a year ago. It was the best move I ever made, and I wish I'd done it sooner. The people are SO friendly in Texas; the housing is 1/2 the price and 10x the quality; the schools are SO much better; the crime rate is virtually non-existent (absolutely NO graffiti or homeless people at every on-ramp); medical care is better; the skies are big, blue and CLEAN; and everything else is so much cheaper..... Actually, nearly as many people are fleeing California, as there are moving into it:) Colorado, Texas and Las Vegas are innundated with people "getting out of Dodge"

It is definitely has something to do with tv. But also its reputations. California has something that the rest of the country lacks: Colorful atmosphere, cultural diversity and great weather.

I think California is a great place to live.
I was raised in Beverly Hills and had a safe upbringing.
Ok, I know it's expensive but there are still things that outweigh the cons . Everywhere has it's pros and cons! For example, the weather is great!

I have lived in London for the past 2 years, which I also love despite it's crappy weather, price and crime rates but nothing compares to jumping on a plane and coming back home. The buzz of landing in LAX itself is exciting!

glitterpunkgirliee
Probably because the entertainment industry makes California seem like it's this great place to be. I currently live in CA and I can't wait til I can afford buy a house out of state. I'm counting down the days til I can leave this horrible overcrowded place.

I don't want to live in CA.... ;) I love NY!

It seems like a glamorous place, first of all - movies, Hollywood, gorgeous people. Then, of course, there is the weather. I think that appeals to people more than anything.

well it is an indulgence and a luxury if youre willing to spend enough. all the hype is caused by hollywood, pictures of celebrities walking around, tabloids, fashion, advertisements, etc. people want to be on the scene because they believe theyre life will become amazing and fairytale-like in la la land.they also believe they will get disccovered by an amazing agent or scout and become miraculously famous like other rare celebs in the past.
i love la. but for otthers your happiness here all depend on where you live, how much $ you got, and if youre tough enough to live and make a living here. its the real world... like every other place. dont be fooled by consumerism because la isnt for everyone

Chelsie surf
I completely disagree with you. California is a great place to live. Yes, the economy is not that great right now, but the entire country is in a downturn and many other states are likely worse off. California has the largest gross state product in the country, is the largest agricultural producing state, and the biggest manufacturing location. Besides, the weather is nice. So yeah, it may not be paradise, but I would say that in many ways it's better than other parts of the US. Maybe if you go out and live in the boonies of the midwest for a few years you'll learn to appreciate your state more.

KK
The Media tells us we want to. We are so brain-washed by the media. CA gets painted up like it's some heavenly place to be. It's not. I'd rather live normally in Idaho or Wisconsin than to be something I'm not In Califor-nee.

Because of the weather and because of everything there is to do there.

I think you'll find any major place is popular to move to: Los Angeles, Miami, New York, London, Paris, Rome...
