Why does it seem that EVERYONE in NYC is rich???

I mean when I go there I see guys in their 20s driving Masseratis, Porsches, Bentleys and living in $4,000 a month one bedroom apartments. Where do they get the cash? And it seems like everyone has so much money (upper East Side) that even Bentleys are double parked by fire hydrants. What gives????

I think you answered your own question: If you're looking where the affluent live, that's what you'll find.

NYC has new money, old money, fast money, dirty money, and laundered money. And it's more prominently displayed in certain neighborhoods than others. It's easy to become disillusioned.

In reality, the majority of 20 and 30 yr-olds spend their money traveling by MetroCard, and/or commuting into the City to work. Who's to say they don't find their lives richly rewarding also?

Don't get caught up in trying to catch up. Or making people think you're already there. You've chosen a tough city to try.

Have a look around the rest of the town. It ain't so.

You might want to explore other parts of the city. May I suggest that you take a ride on the subway where the rest of us NYers are.

Because its really expensive to live in the city....

But don't be fooled, its a small percentage.

There are over 8 million people in NYC. They are not all living in $4000 apartments or driving Bentleys (or anything for that matter!)

You are seeing a very small cross-section of NYC that just stands out the most. But that's not everyone who lives here!

I am a public school teacher. I DO have a car (most New Yorkers don't) but it's an ordinary American sedan, bought used!

I DO live in a house, but I bought it when prices were cheaper, and I bought something no one wanted and fixed it up (now all my friends who tried to talk me out of it are jealous!) I also traded up, after having sold an apartment by playing the real estate game wisely. AND I've lived here for long enough to know just how to do this.

But I can't afford all the luxuries you can find in NYC. Many people can't, or only do it as a splurge. That's okay. There are tons of things to do here that are free or cheap, and you can really enjoy New York as a middle class person, believe me!

Not EVERYONE is rich. You probably went to the Upper East Side or whatever. If you go to other parts of the city, you will see a lot of unlucky people and also fortunate ones. Everyone wants to live a good life, and some people are extravaganza so it's not all what you think.

You ought to head downtown/ into the other neighborhoods. Won't see all your Bentleys there.

There are some poor areas.

I was naive in thinking that NYC was picture perfect like the movies. Then one day I took a day trip there and got lost in the projects. I've def learned that not everyone in the city is rich.

WB
obviously....you have not been to other parts of NYC my friend. "EVERYONE" is not rich. That CAPITALIZED "EVERYONE" IS TOTALLY WRONG!!!!

Rich are around Rich's
Poor the same at all places.
