Why does the USA have a $1 Note?

Why does the USA have a $1 Note? Its worth soo little, and after about 2 years it is so damaged it has to be destryed! and u cant put them in vendin machines n stuff.
In the UK our smallest Note is £5 (worth $9.50)
and in canada there smallest note is $5
and in France its €5.

why not use the dollar coin?
its stupid to have such a small note!!!!!!!!

europeans are dumb, americans rule

that's why

That is a mystery to me too. I even heard a news report that found the treasury is losing money on the $1. The cost of making a bill is something like $5 while they usually get retired every 2-3 so its about a 50% loss....that's huge. I agree we should have the $1 coin. Most people don't carry a whole lot of cash anymore anyway, a lot is done on credit. You can now put your big mac onto a visa card. If it was smart, it wouldn't be the us government

They have tried having dollar coins here, but people didn't like using them. One problem was one of the ones they made was the size of the quarter, and people were too lazy/stupid to bother to look at what they were holding in their hand, and gave their dollar coins as quarters in stores. So we are stuck with the dollar bill.

For the same reason we can't get rid of the penny; custom.
I get Sacajaweas by the roll and have $100 in the house at any given time. I love to give 'em out to kids. Waitresses still get excited by them.

They have tried dollar coins here, but too many people complained. Of course, they made them slightly larger than a quarter. It would be better to use a dollar coin and a two dollar coin, but no one here has the guts to say no more paper small notes. I love my loonies and pounds. Much easier.

Americans are stubborn about many things and not using $1 coins is one of them.

The government has tried to introduce $1 coins several times. One featured an engraving of Susan B. Anthony but resembled the quarter too much to be useful. A couple decades later, they tried a larger gold coin with Sacagewea (I know I just mangled that spelling) and it still didn't fly. I still remember getting about 3 of those back from a stamp machine one time and having no idea what to do with them. I needed to do laundry that afternoon and - although there was a machine in my laundry room that converted $1 bills to the coins needed to run the machines, my $1 coin was absolutely useless there.

I don't mind them, It's better than carrying around a pocket or purse full of change!

Most of us Americans only have a dollar at a time to spend...

Our government needs to spend money!
Probably on politicians' nephews and cousins who get a small fortune to "Create" commemorative currency.

We had dollar coins that were too similar to the quarter dollar and never used much.

How about our two dollar bills? Several issues over the years and also very wasteful as cash registers don't have the extra slot.
Who needs two's when you have ones? What next, threes and fours?

Max
Why? Why not? They are very useful, and we'll keep them as long as they remain useful. Thanks for the splendid question.

Americans are very conservative about their money. The idea of ditching something like the franc or mark for the euro is unthinkable. However, if they ever replaced the dollar with the Ronald Reagan Dollar Coin, people would accept that.

Princess Buttercup
We tried to have a dollar coin, twice in recent history, and both times it never caught on.

Coins are a pain. You either have to have a pocket full of change or carry a man-purse if you are male. I know there are wallets with change pockets for Europeans, but they are thick and aren't readily available here.

It's much easier to put a dollar bill into a billfold than it is to carry around coin. Less chance of loss.

newyorkgal71
Americans do not like dollar coins. We have had them, many years ago, as well as recent:

The Sacagawea Golden Dollar

They're too cumbersome to carry with us. Paper is light and folds, easy to deal with.

californiapeach07
Why not!, its only a buck. Dont call it stupid because you dont agree w/ it. your stupid

Here in America we believe in excess!! we light our cigars with $100 bills!

jannabanana
Why do you care? What does us having a $1 bill have anything to do with you?

Personally I hate dollar coins. They're too heavy, and an inconvenience. And if people took care of their dollar bills, they wouldn't be "destroyed in two years"

It's not stupid. It's convenient.

Yes--why is it that the USA is so damn stupid--all of these people from all over hellnback georgia with all of these brilliant ideas about how everything we do should be done and how it could be better and on and on and on---Perish the thiought that the freakin' government has the best minds on the planet doing consistant surveys and user analyzations and etc etc etc on the subject and have just a little more knowledge about what their doing than some dork that rolled out of bed this morning with some brilliant plan of how to improve the world--Here's just one of thousands of reasons for the dollar bill dude-----Dancers---now try to take that away from the American male and see what you got ???? But of course you've got it all figured out---where do you people come from ??????

It's not stupid, and they do go in vending machines. I mean, all that metal adds up, and it doesn't fit in my wallet.

Unfortunately the dollar coin never really took off, because you can't change old habits.

im from canada and i am wondering the same thing...

amygirl9333
1ST OF ALL, WE DO HAVE A DOLLAR COIN.. EVER BEEN TO NEW YORK OR JERSEY SMARTY PANTS?? 2ND OFF, AMERICANS ARE SMART ENOUGH TO MAKE A BILL, SO THAT WE DON'T CARRY AROUND A POCKET FULL OF COINS WEIGHING US DOWN !!!! 3RD OF ALL YOU'RE STUPID FOR IMPLYING OTHER COUNTRIES ARE BETTER THAN US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
