Because it didn't come from the English. It was a GIFT from the French. |

One reason they don't is that the statue was a GIFT from FRANCE in 1886.
Anything else, Mr. Knowledge? |

the Statue of Liberty was given to America by the French and it was designed and made by the same Frenchman an engineer by the name of Eiffel who also made the Eiffel Tower . |

Idiot! As stated, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French government to the USA.
Get down off of your high horse you fool! If we are talking "theft" then why not ask when the UK is going to give the Elgin Marbles back to the Greeks, or all the other historical artifacts at the British Museum back to the countries from whence they came.
I do sometimes wonder about the mentality of people from this country! |

It was a gift. No one is ever obligated to return a gift. Also, it came from France, not England. |

I thought the Statue of Liberty was given as a gift to the USA from the French? There's a mini one at the River Seine in Paris.
I could be wrong however, but that's what I was told on a trip to France
Hope this was in some way informative :) |

Because neither England nor Britain have any legal claim to the statue of liberty. It was a gift from the French state. Are you thinking about some other piece of infrastructure? |

First of all, no it is not on loan. It was a gift to the United States in presented 100 years after the founding of our country.
Second of all, it did NOT come from England, but from France.
It was a gift from the people of France to honor the historically close relationship between the two countries, both founded on revolution and the notion of the rights of man. Hence, the name - the statue of "liberty". |

Phil is right, and if everything went back to it's place of origin every museum in the UK would be two thirds empty. |

The statue was a GIFT of the People of FRANCE in 1884, with the pedestal paid for by public donations of Americans. The Brits had nothing to do with it, except for their having gained control of the island it stands on when they tossed the Dutch out of Nieuw Amsterdam in 1624--and they lost the island in 1783 under the Treaty of Paris.
And the Cuban government in 1906 rented Guantanamo to the USA.
Your question smells like so much from Britain--we own everything.
Try getting out of Ireland. |

When England loans a Statue of Liberty to the state of New York, I will personally insist that the governor return the statue when he is done.
Until then. |

My friend, I think you better get your facts straight, because you provably fell a sleep in history class. First of all, the Statue of Liberty was not loan to us. It was given to us as a gift.
Second, it was not the English who have given us the Statue of Liberty as a gift. It was the French. When the statue arrived in New York Harbor on June 17, 1885 on board the French frigate Isère, it was packed in 214 crates. It took more than a year for the entire statue to be build.
Good luck
