Why is Detroit such a rotting heap of garbage?

N.A.F.T.A. caused the gap collapse of middle class & the working poor.Detroit is a jewel of a city but with factories closing shop and heading to Canada or Mexico for cheapor labor,it broke the economy.Some people with clout will take notice of how low property is selling for and hopefully turn that city around.

Here is a pretty good answer I think. A lot of younger people are being raised into gang violence and are living there life's that way. You know where the gang leads. Drugs, Alcoholism, and the list goes on. I mean also the city's not really doing anything to help the smaller problems that are the reason for the bigger problems. You can walk into any school and you will have to go through a check thingy, like at a jail or prison. So when they say school is like a prison it it. I don't get why the don't just start by going into the small problems and stop them from getting bigger.

Oh yeah and because Jennifer Granholm is the governor of Michigan and because Detroit is in Michigan. =[

It's getting better. Downtown is getting cleanier and big events like the Super Bowl, MLB All-Star game, and Wrestlemania the past few years have helped the city get back on it's feet. The major problem is the auto industry and the Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, if both of those get fixed the city, and the state for that matter will be better off.

I have never been to Detroit yet but the pictures I see of Detroit are Beautiful and Gorgeours. You must be high because detroit is not a rotting heap or garbage.

I will get deleted but its because the (blacks) that live there (81% of detroit) are more interested in showing whitey that they are nobody's "boy".
The black leadership eschews and rejects help to maintain the status quo.
I will never understand why people think that violence has to go along with poverty...every day on the news you hear of somebody getting shot in detroit, innocent people in bars, people in churches, it doesnt even raise an eyebrow anymore.
The majority of the inhabitants are not productive memebers of society, they are a drain on the taxpayer.
Detroit will not start to become a viable place to live for at least the next 20 years

It's a lot better now than it was back in 2001 - 2003. I can honestly say that I'm impressed that the city is cleaning up. However, with a city that depends heavily on the automotive industry (that is currently depressed), it's currently at a standstill.

I hear that there is a lot of revitalization downtown Detroit.
