because its part of argentina who lost it in a game of cards to the english who went to war with canvey island and gave it to them as part of the peace treaty who then decided to give it to the usa

Texas declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and existed as the independent Republic of Texas for nearly a decade.
In 1845, it joined the United States as the 28th state.
Texas is one of only four states that was an independent nation before becoming a constituent state of the U.S.

Because of the Texas revolution- ever hear of the Alamo, a fort type area in Texas? Originally Texas WAS part of Mexico, but the American settlers had controversy with Mexico. When Santa Anna (Mexican dictator) attacked the Alamo, the guys in there defended it for 12 days before it fell.

All while this was happening, Sam Houston (American guy) was gathering up an Army to either aid the Alamo or attack the Mexicans. By the time he rounded up roughly 800 men, it was too late. So, being tailed by Santa Anna and his army of thousands, Houston rushed Anna's army, flanked it, killing nearly 600+ Mexicans in under 20 minutes, capturing Santa Anna. It was an impressive victory, which lead to the United States involvement in a conquest across our southern boarder. This war ended up gaining us Texas, along with a land purchase gaining California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of other current day states.
