Why is it that they don't have a special day for poor kids at Disney World???

I have heard of children living in Florida all of their lives without having the opportunity of visiting Disney World. Since these Parks make such high earning in revenues, how come they don't use one day of the month to do some good and give the opportunity to those less fortunate to have the dream of their lives?? Why does everything has to be about profits???

I don't go to Disney world anymore. I refuse to sponsor such inhumane, stingy and money hungry companies. Since I love nature I don't miss it at all, and as far as I am concern, I won't contribute a penny to make them richer at fools cost.
Additional Details
I wasn't talking about the miserable contributions they make to look good before people! after all to donate a miserable million from a company or empire that makes millions, Perhaps more in revenues is totally ridiculous. That probably can make them sleep better at night and ease their conscience(I personally don't think they have one) Or who do you think is more gracious before the eyes of God....those whom give from the little bit that they have or those who give of their excess?? Besides, who's talking about hand outs?? Anybody has the possibility to become something but also an illness can set you back. So be kind to those less fortunate because you don't know if life can make you become one of them.

Unfortunatly they are all about profit so this is very unlikely to happen.

That 'money hungry' company is a publicly owned corporation, which means those interested in profits are your neighbors who own Disney stock or any of the Disney companies. Maybe you could knock on their door and express you views.

Disney in the mean time supports Make-A- Wish Foundation as well as Starlight Foundation and provides many familes not only park admission but the royal treatment. Additionally, Disney is a major contributor to childrens hospitals including a recent one million donation for the Florida Hospital's Children's Center as well as a major supporter of the Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital. I would hardly define that as 'inhumane, stingy and money hungry". Giving children at chance at life in my book is more important then giving an additional discount to Florida residents so they can visit the park for a day. I am sure your contribution will be sorely missed by that child who needs a transplant or chemo, but go ahead and enjoy nature.

--------
It is pointless to list the other contributions the Disney Company, it's subsidiary companies and their Shareholders have donated since you have already trivialized them and decided how God preceives them as well. Must be awesome to know so much. As far as asking about 'handouts' in fact you were the one asking why Disney doesn't 'give the less fortunate' a day to "have the dreams of their lives." Isn't that a 'handout'? Yes, people can be set back by an illness, which I suppose is why Disney recognizes this and makes the type of donations it does. Disney is not responsible for all the poor kids in Florida let alone the world, would it not be unfair to poor kids everywhere if only the disadvantage kids in Florida get their 'dream' fulfilled?

While your motives seem honorable your logic and placement of blame is faulty.
-----
Ranting and repeated disparaging remarks to respondents only goes to indicate your irrationality on the subject matter.

There are plenty of people living in every state that have never visited a landmark in their own state. I grew up in Chicago and had never been downtown. Are you not going to shop at Walmart because you think they should give away food to poor people? Are you just going to stay away from the entire corporate world and only support independent businesses whom you think are doing something morally right?

Disney is responsible to it's stockholders. They support a significant number of charities and are probably one of the most philanthropic organizations in the US. If they've lost you as a customer, well thats sorry for them, but if you enjoy nature more, than have at it.

The world revolves around profits - thats just the way it goes.

There are kids not just in FL all over the US who has never been to Disney. If Disney had a program that made all the kids that have not gone to Disney they would go broke. Disney helps out in other ways they do all kinds of things to give back to the community. Most of the schools here in FL take a trip to Disney with their school at a reduced price. compared to paying $60 Disney also has all kinds of programs such as Magic Music days where band members from all across can go to Disney and be a band at one of the parks then enjoy the parks after, Make a Wish is held at Disney, and the special Olympics.

Okay, let's look at this for a poor family in NJ
A ticket is $63.90.
Your average round-trip airline ticket is about $300.
Food is at least $50.
A rental car is about $50.
Souvenirs are $20.
Hotels are about $165 a night.

$648.90. Per person. If a poor family of four came, 1935.60. Disney has to pay its employees, pay for the rides, pay the producers of the food and souvenirs. They simply can't afford that. That is alot of money to fork over and I don't think Disney financially can do that.

Yea, sweetie I meant for one day.Want to do a basic week?
That would be at least 15,000 dollars. Want to fork over that much? Go ahead, be my guest.

well, its fine that you boycott them, but if you dont want to be a hypocrite, you need to boycott all the other companies that just want to make money. so no more wearing clothes, talking on you cell phone, driving a car, etc. that'll show 'em

As other people have mentioned, Disney does the best they can to help poor kids and other people to!

Here's the deal, that not many people know. When Michael Eisner was Pres. of Disney, he was very money hungry and did what ever he could to save himself a penny. Including making his employees pay for their outfits(very expensive), lowered the pay rate, built a mediocre park that was not very Disney-esc (California park) etc. Disney in general was not in a good place with him around.

Now, with the new Pres. Iger is doing wonders with the parks. Ride after ride is being refurbished(much needed), the employees are becoming happier to be around etc. The thing is, he knows what the parks needs and has every good intention on fixing the problems. He is not a money hungry guy. So maybe, just maybe he'll get a chance to do something for poor kids. He's a good guy, he does what's right. You just need to give him time to fix what Eisner screwed up first!

But really, Disney does their best in helping kids and families. It's a year of a million dreams and they are letting families stay in the castle for God's sake! Give it time!!

If you boycott Disney you gotta boycott other "horrible" companies like Wal-mart and Circuit City,or even KFC!

Disney does plenty of things to really help their community, and they have programs that help their workers find volunteer opportunities in the local community. Plus they are very open to helping charities like Make A Wish (I actually have Disney's "Wishes" CD which was really classic Disney music and all the proceeds went to make a wish). Disney lets them into the parks free and really plusses their experience with all sorts of extras so they have a really magical time.

Other groups also offer trips like this to people who are less fortunate. I knew a student who get to travel from IL to the magic kingdom for one day, and it was amazing to see his face when he got back. He was very poor, and also had special needs. If Disney finds out about these trips they will also do extra things to plus the kids experiences.

I don't think a day like you are suggesting is really possible. How could they set criteria for who gets in. Where would they draw the line between one homeless family and another. Would everyone have to bring in their wick cards and subsidized housing to get admission? Plus, although a disney vacation is nice, aren't there more important things these children need, like clothes and housing and food? I know the Disney company supports things like that (as most large comapnies do).

As much as I agree with you that every child deserves a trip to Disney World (and I hope they all get one), I don't agree with you that Disney has done a bad job on their end. In fact I think they've done a great job.

It costs alot of money for Disney to provide the experience you get when visiting the theme parks. The admission price does NOT alone cover this, it has to be made up for with food, parking feeds, merch, etc.

Unused food is donated every night to Second Harvest which provides food to the poor. I know this because I work at MGM Studios.
Poor people could use food before a trip to Disney.
And this isn't even counting the numberous disney sponsered events that still have that disney touch

You are out of your mind. Why would a business give away it's product for free? Disney does so much for people all over the world, the theme parks generate the revenue to allow them to do that. Disney also teams with the Make A Wish foundation to make 'dreams come true'. Have you also stopped drinking Coke/Pepsi and boycotted all other brands for not giving away free products? Do your homework and see what Disney has done for the community before you criticize. Why don't you contribute and bring an underprivileged child to the them park? Oh, that's right, it is easier to criticize someone else rather than doing something about it yourself.

you seriously dont think disney doesnt somehow give back? besides, they already have sick kid days and everything inbetween, at some point the poor have to take responsibility for their situation and do something about it. giving free handouts doesnt solve the problem. while we are at it, why dont we have a special day for only a specific minority? because thats stupid, thats why.

and thank you for not going, that means one less person that i have to deal with when i do go. but while you are on your moral high horse, make sure you apply this principal to everything you do and not just disney for the sake of looking cool.

Hannah
While you are most certainly entitled to your opinions, I don't agree with you whatsoever. You contend that Disney is only after money, and like others have said, so is every other company out there. Good luck finding a company that doesn't care about making money. While you're out there looking though, how about you find another company that donates and gives so much back to the community.

A poster above me mentioned a one million dollar contribution to a children's hospital in Florida and you in turn dismissed that as a pittance. One million dollars in the grand scheme of Disney isn't much, but that's not the only donation they give and money is not everything.

In 2005, Disney gave over 190 million dollars in charitable contributions to various organizations. On top of that, they brought over 5,000 children from various organizations like Make a Wish Foundation and Children's Wish, to the parks absolutely for free with their families. Or how about the fact that Disney's VoluntEars program contributed over 442,000 hours of service to their communities. All these figures are from 2005, and I guarantee that those numbers have only increased since.

I've worked for Disney for three years and I absolutely love it not only because I get to have a blast everyday, but because I know that I work for a company that cares about the the community and the environment alike.

It's obvious though that you have some kind of vendetta against Disney, and that's fine. I feel sorry for you though that your opinion is so clouded by your lack of knowledge on the subject.

Lilli
Do you know any theme parks that do this? I don't. Why pick on Disney? Do you know of any airlines that give away free flights once a year? Do you know of any grocery stores that give away free shopping days? I know it sounds like a nice idea, but face it, corporate America doesn't work like that.

<3
well you are quite strange.. i am going there in 6 days and cant wait, and i even want to work there when I'm older.. you are just a little ambitious jerk aren't you? well, hope that helped, and you need to get to your senses soon cause your a wreck.

I am surprised they dont help local kids. Are you sure they dont. have you asked them. I know for sure they help kids with disabilities and once there they give them a wonderful time. They also offer reducsed entrance to local residents.

The don't have a day for poor folks because they are only interested in making more money so that they can live the rich lifestyle, I would avoid Disney World. They do have a Gay Pride day there though.
