Why isn't New York the capitol of USA?

The reason the capitol was taken to DC was to avoid having the capitol in any given state this way it would be fair to all states. i can imagine all states have a good reason why they should have the capitol in their state. now New york city should be the Capitol of New york state and not Albany (with respect to all those from Albany)

Actually New York was our first capitol.George Washington was inaugurated at Federal Hall in Lower Manhattan .The US capitol was then moved south to Philadelphia and finally to a separate geographically neutral and non-political district that was created for that purpose .
I agree that since NYC is the greatest city in America[and always has been ] that the US Capitol should be here.NYC also has something else going for it ;it'sthe most culturally diverse city in the world so maybe our president and our lawmakers could get out into the streets and rub elbows with. and buy a hot dog for some real Americans

Many capitols aren't the biggest cities. Do your homework on this and you will see the truth in my statement. There's some value in it, too, which your study will reveal. Our capitol has moved over the years, by the way.

I am from UK...but I think it was decided that the actual Capital city should not be given to any one state, as it might get a bit big headed....so the created the District of Columbia...and put a place called Washington in it.....that's why its the Capital.....New York city is not the capital of anything.

In 1791, George Washington commissioned architect Pierre l'Enfant to build a capital city. The idea was to not have it in any state (District of Columbia is not a state, guys... the country only has 50, not 51, states) so no state could say they had any special privilege in this area. The city wasn't finished until after Washington's death, so it was named after him.

Originally, the District of Columbia was made from the states of Maryland and Virginia. A few years after the city was put up, the Virginia section went bact to that state and became Arlington County. This is the site of Fort Myer, the Pentagon, and the Arlington National Cemetery.

Notice all of the state capitals are in small towns? They did that to spread the wealth around and not center everything in one city. Washington D.C. before what it is today was nothing but a little town so instead of putting all of the wealth and power in one city, they distribute it.

Remember that when DC was created, the States were far from "united." The states and it's inhabitants were vastly different from one another in so many ways (a lot of states even had their own currencies). The "uniting" of all these states took many years to occur, along with a lot of bloodshed and political upheavel and compromise.

Thus, with this background its fairly obvious why there was a need for political neutrality. Oh, and back in the day New York City was no where near as prominent/ large/ diverse as it is today. New York City's rise to global prominence took many years to establish, it wasn't even the largest city 200 years ago!

New York is too busy doing everything else. Furthermore, when it was time to find a centrally-located capital in the 13-states days, New York wasn't centrally located. Washington was set aside as the compromise, between Virginia and Maryland.

But again, New York is too busy doing everything else. That's why the STATE capital is up in Albany.

New York city is not the capital of New York state. It is Albany.

N.Y, It is saturated and conjusted with lot of buildings.
Any capital city should of enough land to accomodate Capitol Building, other Government offices embassies etc.So Washington D.C was selected.
