There are more numerous and diverse opportunities for high career advancement in N.Y., but...

Chicago has a "lower cost of living" overall...

For your career....fashion designer, the answer is obvious. NEW YORK! Outside of Paris and Milan....THIS is the city that you want to be in to further prosper with your career goals.

Sure, the fast pace, "New York Minute" movement of the city may seem overwhelming at first to those not used to it but the longer you live here, you become part of the fabric. And contrary to stereotypes, we ARE friendly people and will give a stranger a hand if they are in distress! :)

Chicago is a nice city...I have been there. But for your career, which is fashion, New York is where you NEED to be.

NY!! It's the best place ever. You can go anywhere you want and never worry about a car. You can go to the city and shop and see the tree at Christmas. There is always something to do and people to meet. I just moved out of New York City..to follow the man of my dreams...If I could go back I wouldn't have left I miss that place!. Just watch sex and the city...that will give you reason enough. When you live in new york the love you feel is indescribable, you have to find out for yourself!

Because it is the friendliest city in the world and super cool too! New York is wonderful !!!!!! I love it.

Why are you moving to US, and what would you be doing once you got here? Knowing your goals would help us give you a recommendation.

Depends on the neighborhood you are moving to. First check if the neighboorhood is decent enough for you and you are comfortable with it. New York and Chicago are both cool with a lot of entertainment, but neighboorhood first, getting used to traffic and if the neighboorhood/house is near to your workplace.

NYC is more diverse and no one will give you a hard time for not sounding American - we are more used to people who have learned English as a second language here.

NYC is also much easier to get around without a car! Many peopel don't even own cars here.

NYC is better if you are interested in fashion, it's one of the main industries here.

Chicago is cheaper, however. NYC is somewhat expensive to live in.

BTW, I loved visiting Chicago, and can see why people like it there. I prefer NYC, of course. But Chicago has some nice points. I do think the person who said NYC is better to visit than to live in doesn't understand NYC. It's actually far better to live here than to visit here. I think tourists get overwhelmed and don't see NYC at it's best. It's a far more liveable city than it seems and it's easier to get around once you know the City better.

i've never been to chicago but i've lived in new york all my life. it's an AMAZING city. many people are referring to "a busy city with bad traffic" in mahattan. there are other boroughs in new york than manhattan. i suggest that you dont take advice from people who dont live in ny or has only been there for a vacation because they probably didnt experience all the different places in NY in a small 7 day vacation. i mean, if NY was so "ugly, dirty, & filty", WHY would celebs pay so much money to live in gorgeous houses here? there's ALWAYS something to do in NY. & um not every place in new york is over-populated. i mean really, you people act like there's no space to breathe. it's not OVER-POPULATED it's just DIVERSE. sure, manhattan has alot of people but that's cause it's the big city. tourists, business people, celebs, you name it they're there! dont like too much diversity? try other boroughs! some people think of new yorkers as "rude and impatient". well i mean if some idiot tourist is standing in the middle of the street in a completely different world while people are trying to get to work OF COURSE we're going to get impatient. but whenever i go to manhattan & ask someone to help, they always help me no matter how much of a rush they're in. so i guess i'll conclude this with go for new york because you definitely won't be disappointed. good luck on your search :)

EDIT-
also, like another person said - new york is MUCH easier to get around without a car. if you don't like traffic, then just try not to drive too much especially in manhattan. my mother doesnt drive but works in the city every day. i go to school all the way on the other side of brooklyn. there's trains, buses, taxis (if you dont feel like driving) & walking is also an option. hope this helped.

I am a Chicagoan, true and true... I would love to visit New York, but I believe that it is only a place that is nice enough to visit. New York life is like a city that never sleeps, there is lots to do and you are in contact with sooo many different kinds of people. Many of my friends that visited New York City, believe that with all the commotion and fun, it isnt the best plac to live because it is pretty filthy. If you like the feel of a huugggee crowd, that New York is your best bet. Chicago, nonetheless is a very busy city, however, compared to New York it is a calmer place. In both places, winter is hard, but I believe in Chicago, you have an opportunity to have a balance of fun and work. I hope you make the best decision, but personally I prefer the Midwest, CHICAGO, IL BABY!!! Good luck!

If you like being taxed to death and haveing your polititions tell you how to live then choose New York.

If you want ethnic diversity, beauty, and a laid back attitude then choose Chicago.

Chicago is called the Paris of the US.

Everywhere in the world I have travled I ALWAYS hear the same thing when I tell someone I'm from Chicago - They take 20 min's to tell me how much they love Chicago!!

New York is cold, Emotionally Cold, while Chicago is both a booming metropolous as well as a laid back, Mid-West Attitude.

We have more distinctive ethnic diversity then New York too.

We have EVERY type of person you can think of and they have all discovered how to retain their individual ethnic herritage without turning it into a "Cause".

No matter what industry you are in.
No matter what your ethnicity or country of origen...
No matter what your personal likes or dislikes...

CHICAGO IS THE WAY TO GO!

Our sports teams may suck but everything else is top notch!

PLEASE take my word for it...

I lived out of Chicago for many years and the best day of my life was when I finally moved "Home".

No matter where else I have lived and no matter how many other places I have visited ONLY Chicago has held the titel of Home in my heart!
