because they want you to believe it interferes with the flight controls but according to the myth busters that is wrong, there really is no reason, other than you have to pay for the plane phone.

There are potential communications issues that may or may not be relevant. Remember Todd Beamer during 9/11? They are in the process of deciding whether to alter or cancel this ban from what I've read.

Interfers with instrumentation and NOW they are testing to what extent. They have actually found that a cell phone on a plane calling out and being called, can actually bring a plane down.

There is the risk that it can interfere with the equipment in the plane. Remember that different phones work on different frequencies so just because one won't interfere doesn't mean that another will. Once you are in the air your phone won't work anyway so you might as well turn it off.

Deal with it!

Because the wave-frequencies from your phone, as well as many other electronics, have the potential to create complications with the aircrafts controls and electronics.

Same reason you can't have them on in hospitals - there is a chance the frequency will interfere with the instumentation on the aircraft or in the case of hospitals the telemetry equipment - it has been shown that it is a slight chance but liability being what it is - why take the risk - the decision is to err on the side of caution - besides what do you want to talk on a cell phone for on a plane ride - sit back, order a cocktail and enjoy the flight! It is too much work to confirm or deny whether or not all the different standards of cell phones (all of which have very powerful radio transmitters in them) interfere with the all of the different avionics on a plane, so they just make you shut them off.

In general, cell phones don't interfere with avionics unless they are really close to them, but there would be so much testing involved, the FAA has decided better safe than sorry.

Considering how much cell phones can interfere with car and home stereos (even when they're playing CDs) I can see why.

Because the wireless signals interferes with the radio communication of the plane and the control tower. At least that was mentioned in the plane before it takes off.

As most people have mentioned....it causes interference. What I don't understand is why I have to turn off my hand held solitaire game.
