Wife and I (early 30s) traveling to New York City in a week. What to wear? |
Coming from Houston, Texas and need to know what kind of cold weather coat or clothing to bring. My wife and I don't want to look goofy wearing arctic type gear unless it's necessary. Thanks |

Wear something WARM... layers in fact... sounds like theres a hurricane outside my window right now, I don't even want to go outside today!
update: I eventually did go out, it wasn't even that cold today, just sounded that way with all the garbage blowing by my window (yeah I live in a basement). |

It will be chilly, I'd say in the 40s most likely. Bring a coat just in case it snows, and you would think it feels even colder since your used to the Houston heat. Bring an umbrella, long-sleeve shirts, gloves or scarfs I don't think are necessary, but definitely jeans and long-sleeve shirts. |

This time of year in NYC the warmest you can hope for would be mid 40's. Prepare for cold, rain, or snow. Tell your wife not to worry about looking " goofy ". New Yorkers don't look at each other. A mild afternoon could turn into a very cold evening so bring your arctic gear.
You will love NYC. Have fun. |

Its hard to tell what the weather will be like this time of year, but you can get a good sense by checking the forecast a couple days before you go. Remember that you'll be doing a lot of walking, so if its in the 40s and sunny, you'll get pretty hot just from the sun beating down on you. If its in the 40s and rainy, you'll be cold and miserable - hate to say it. Wind is also a factor, and if its windy in the 30s it will be very cold. My best suggestion is not to rely on a single heavy coat, but to bring layers if you can, that way you can pull stuff off if you get too hot or throw stuff on if its cold.
One other thing to remember - it may not make you feel better, but there are a LOT of people like you visiting New York this time of year. You'll probably be hanging out in touristy areas, and I can almost guarantee you that there will be other people there who look more ridiculous than you do no matter what you wear (well - almost no matter what!). Point is, you're only in New York for a little while - make sure you're comfortable, you get to see the things you want to see and have a good time! You're not necessarily going to "blend in", but you won't stick out like a sore thumb either.
Have a great trip! |

Just a warm coat and simple gloves & scarf. Wear comfortable shoes.
Basically bring clothes that you can layer, long sleeve shirts, sweaters, etc. |

Well look at the weather forcast.
And remember layering is the best for you. mittens over gloves, scarfs, ear muffs |

It's the east coast, so wear long-sleeved t-shirts and coats, but don't overdo it. |

it's been very cold these past couple of weeks and today is quite windy. you don't need ARCTIC wear, lol, but definitely bundle up in layers. hats, gloves and scarves are essential. a good coat over a warm sweater with a shirt underneath, some jeans and a good pair of socks and you're good to go.
Enjoy your time here! |

It is in the 40's right now in the city, very windy. Next week they are calling for rain, but it might change by then.
Wear sweaters (or long sleeve shirts) and jeans with sneakers and a coat (not a snow coat, but moderate coat) and gloves and mabyee a hat. You can buy a cheap unbrella in the city, for under $5 if it does rain.
Just before you leave check out www.weather.com for NYC's weather, just in case it snows (whitch it might if it gets cold enought, instead of rain) to pack boats.
Have fun! |

You never look silly in layers, that way if it gets a little warmer, you can shed the top layer(s). She probably needs boots, so her feet stay warm, but she still looks fashionable. She should also bring a nice wrap for the evenings, when it gets really cold. A cashmere wrap would be stylish enough to wear to a restaurant, and keep her warm. Guys can't go wrong with some nice shoes and button-down tops. Wear a peacoat and an undershirt for extra warmth. Believe me, it is freezing up there. You think it's cold in Houston, just wait untill you get up north!!!!!!!! |

I have a son in NY and believe me, New Yorkers dress appropriately for the season. It is very cold at times there, stocking caps and heavy coats are the scene all over. Boots and lots of boots to be seen. Went to Ellis Island last March and it was brutally cold. Enjoy your stay!!! I LOVE NY, would live there if I could afford to. LOL!!! |

The weather in New York has been really strange this year.We hardly had snow, some days are warm like 25-30F. And some days are cold but nothing extreme. However the weather can change so come prepared just in case.
So bring warm coats or jackets, hats, gloves, boots, and scarves... Even though it may not be too cold it is always windy. |

I would suggest checking the weather, because the temperatures have been up and down lately. Some days will be warmer than others, but definitely bring your arctic type gear because you are going to be doing a lot of walking around and don't want to ruin the trip being too cold.
My suggestion is to bring wool coats, not 'poofy' jackets because this style can still work when it's 7 degrees celsius and 40 degrees.
Definitely bring your hat, gloves & scarf - they don't take up much room and may be needed.
It wont get close to "light jacket" weather this time of year.
The ideal outfit I would like to suggest:
A wool coat that is not too long, boots, jeans, scarf hat gloves and sweater under coat, long sleeves, warm but not too heavy socks.
Enjoy! |

New York usually doesn't reach arctic temps.
Average temps this time of year are in the low-mid 30s during the day and low 20's at night.
I would just bring some thick jeans, long sleeve shirts, a ski cap, gloves, and a heavy coat.
You don't really need gloves, but since you are from a warmer climate, better to be safe. |
|

Just me.
 |
Yes it is necessary for winter clothes |

Hey I live in new york i think rite now u shud wear a sweater and a jacket on top of it...and sum gloves and a hat...trust me i live in brookllyn and it is very cold...its a little warmer in manhatten |

My advice is dress warm. Since you're used to the nice weather in Houston, where tempartures are in 70s and 80s, the tempatures in NYC are in the 20s to 40s degrees range, you will feel it the minute you get out of the airport.
Pack heavy coats, hats, gloves and sweaters. Since the forcast calls for no snow next week, don't bother packing the boots However, pack a pair of good sneakers, you will need it for that walking. And before you leave for New York, check the Weather Channel for the latest national weather.
Good luck. |

dont overdo it. its probably gonna be in the mid 40's and so far, we havent gotten that much snow.
oh yea, some more things
-PLEASE dont walk slow on the sidewalk. we all have places to go and we hate when tourists take their sweet time
-PLEASE do not stop on the sidewalk to take pictures, its annoying
-If you take the subway during rush hour, remember to swipe ya card in right, because that could take up other people's time and make us late for work
Other important things...
Regular Coffee=Coffee with milk and sugar, and its pronounced "cawfee" here (you would be suprised how many people dont know this)
Hero=Submarine sandwich
Slice=1 slice of pizza
Subways run all night, buses dont, and you dont have to pay twice to transfer from one bus to annother.
The front steps of a small building are a Stoop, for a hi-rise its a Lobby(just like everywhere else)
Old white people call jeans dungarees, though i dont know why exactly
one more thing.....I dont advise you to hop in a gypsy(non-yellow) cab at the airport because even though its cheaper, they tend to rip off tourists who dont know how to haggle prices beforehand, and you could end up payin +90$ for cabfare to your hotel, when its usually alot less |

This time of year is cold up there they do have warm days to so bring mostly winter basics but bring maybe one shortsleeve or comfy clothes. In a week, the weather here could be doing just about anything, with possible temperatures ranging from below freezing to 50 degrees, rain, snow, wind, sun, fog.
So bring layers--long-sleeve shirts, sweaters, jackets, coats, etc. You'll want something wind resistant--the tall buildings can create quite the wind tunnel effect.
And definitely your most comfortable shoes (preferably water resistant). |
|

Wear a polka jacket and some heavy socks. |

You won't need arctic clothes unless you think you'll be really cold. The wind can be a bit much at night. Heavy jacket, long sleeved shirts and pants. Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. |

It depends what you plan to do...a walk along the lake shore or a shopping on the miracle mile is out of the question...the wind chill in Chicago is -20 to -35 below today....
We are in the middle of a northern winter...just like the ones you read about...perhaps a little worse this year...You wont look goofy wearing arctic gear...you will just fit in with the locals... |
