The majority of the incidents in New Orleans do not happen anywhere a tourist would ever go. Like any major city you have to be smart, try to walk on well lite streets at night and in groups if possible. The French Quarter, Uptown/Garden District and the Marigny (Frenchmen Street) are all areas very safe. Come enjoy yourself and support the local businesses! You will have a blast! |

Um no, My friend and I went last august and had the best time we stayed in the french quarters w hotel and when we were out at night there was always lots security out to make you feel save,it is still a very sad place with so many still with no home but I'd say still go, spend money they need it |

My city of New Orleans is the greatest and most cultural probably in the whole United States. It offers such amazing experiences and adventures. No, you will not get murdered or robbed. Only in the areas devastated by the hurricane are unsafe. The 9th ward is a place to avoid. The french quarter (where i live) is the safest and most fun and interesting. The restraunts close at 11pm and the bars are open all night. Come Visit! You'll have fun and will not regret a minute of it! |

MY wife and I went there last August, IT was nice , I'm sure there are places you can't go to in every city. Just go and enjoy yourself. |

No one can say where or when crime will occur. If you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, most definitely. |

Just use common sense and take the normal precautions you would visiting ANY unfamiliar city. As long as you stay out of the housing projects, don't seek to sell or buy illegal drugs, and don't wander wander down a dark street late at night drunk, you should be fine. And don't flash cash out in public or wear an expensive watch. |

Maybe not if you use common sence.
I would stay away from dark alleys |

you won't get murdered! thats the problem with the press. listen its possible to come down here and not get murdered, just make sure you're careful and visit safe places. places u wouldnt visit in other cities, u shouldnt visit here. but you won't get murdered. lol so many tourists come here & come back because its fun |

OMG no you wont get murdered, are you gonna try to by drugs off the street. i used to live there & i still know allot of people who live there. all the news stories i hear say most violent crime is drug related, i lived there for 6 years all i suffered was my car stolen, but i know its worse since the storm. if you stick to the tourist areas I'm sure you'll be fine i will recomend that you carry a dummy wallet, put some bussiness cards into it and 20$, i will not tell you that getting mugged is out of the question. just stay off lonley streets at nightime. my favorite bars to go to are on frenchman st and the Dragon's Den on esplanade ave. |

Most of the crime involves crack dealers fighting over turf.
As long as you stay out of the poor black residential areas, you'll be fine (just like most other American cities) |

It's safer than ever. The criminals can't afford to live there anymore. |

lol chances are very slim
i feel the same way when i go to new orleans
especially when i pass the projects where i heard that there were a lot of shootings, i usually put my head down to take cover lol. just stay around places with a lot of people so that there will be witnesses if anything happens. try not to go anywheres by yourself in a neighborhood that looks dangerous. |

The news media focus is on murders, and they usually say "crime rate" when they mean "murder rate".
New Orleans is dangerous ONLY if you plan to buy or sell illegal drugs while you are here. Almost 98% of our murders happen within the crack cocaine community and almost all of the other 2% are "domestic" homicides. That doesn't make the crimes OK, but you really don't have to worry about it.
New Orleans isn't even in the "top 25 most dangerous American cities": http://money.cnn.com/2006/10/30/real_estate/Most_dangerous_cities/index.htm
The other anwes are absolutely correct and all you have to do is use the basic common sense needed in every city in the world.
I recommend staying in the French Quarter (Vieux Carre") if you can. There is a very wide range of selections available, from moderate guest houses to very exclusive "boutique" hotels. Search Yahoo Travel and Travelocity for ideas and then check the hotel websites. Also check www.frenchquarterhotels.com for some non-chain hotels.
Katrina flooded about 80% of New Orleans with salt water, and the water stayed for almost a month. Much of the city is still struggling to recover and all you have to do to see devastation is drive around. It will take years for NOLA to fully recover from Katrina.
However, the parts of the city that tourists usually visit were not flooded. It's not a coincidence - the French Quarter and other old parts of the city were built on relatively high ground and only suffered wind damage from Katrina. Almost all of the damage has been repaired and you have to look closely in the FQ and city center to see that Katrina happened at all. You should visit and see for yourself.
Note that the City of New Orleans is only part of the greater New Orleans area. The GNO area had a population of about 1,400,000 before Katrina and is estimated at about 1,200,000 now (July, 2007). The absent 200,000 are mostly from the City of New Orleans and the parishes of Plaquemines and Saint Bernard, which were the worst-flooded parts of the metro area. Jefferson Parish - just to the west of the City - suffered only minor flooding and has fully recovered.
You can drink the water, the electricity & phones work, and services like the post office, hospitals, schools, and police/fire/EMS are operating. Restaurants, stores and shopping centers are open.
Municipal services like street cleaning & trash collection collapsed after Katrina. Those services were fully restored in late 2006 and it is no longer an issue.
You don't need a car to get around in the French Quarter, Central Business District, or Warehouse District. Also, the parking regulations are Byzantine and there are lots of Parking Control Agents. If you drive or rent a car, leave it in a lot or garage unless you are traveling away from downtown.
The regional transit authority (www.norta.com) sells 1 and 3 day passes that offer unlimited use of buses and streetcars for the day(s) you select. There are also lots of taxicabs.
New Orleans has mild weather from late October to early May and the city stays green all year most years (rarely freezes and almost never snows). The weather in late December/early January is not predictable this far in advance so check the weather report just before leaving home.
Hope you have a good visit! |

I was born and raised there, just don't look like a tourist. Don't carry a map, or a camera around your neck, or wear a t-shirt that says "I love New Orleans", reason being, tourist have money. Besides that, it's a great place to visit. And it has the BEST food in the world. Make sure you try Cafe Du Monde. |

You have to use your common sense when visiting ANY large city in the US. You can not be as absent minded as in the boondocks, USA, lol. That said, you won't get murdered in N.O. unless you are looking for trouble. Honestly, I take the locals of any city's opinion of their crime rate with a grain of salt - mainly because if you grew up somewhere things tend to look a bit "rosier" than they would to an outsider. I say, go and help them out, spend some money, just be careful and stay in the major "tourist traps" areas of the city (don't venture out unless you KNOW exactly where you're going and what's going to be there when you arrive) and you should be okay. |

not more than Killa City, Mo (kansas city). New Orleans would make Kansas City look like Beverly Hill, and no u wont white person. |

Visiting New Orleans is no different than anywhere else. If you use common sense you shouldn't have a problem. If you go down dark lonely alleys at night wearing a Rolex you could have a problem.
But if you stay in the heavier populated better lighted areas I don't think you will have to worry. |
