Will be stranded in Kansas first 2 weeks of July - what is there to do? |
I'm going to be stuck in Kansas. Been before, Kansas sucks. SOOO BORING! What should I do to get through those 2 weeks before I get to go back to Bangkok??? How can anyone live in that place? It seems like the people in Kansas are of 3 main types:
A) Professional types who are slaves to big houses and flashy cars. They try to emulate how they think people with real money act and live. All they care about is status symbols - big hat no cattle!
B) Urban criminals and stupid urban poor people who think they want to be like the professionals.
C) Rednecks. I'm not sure what (or if) they think. They may be aliens. All I can tell from what I have seen is that their idea of retirement planning seems to center around collecting as many early 1980's Camaros (Mostly on blocks) as possible in their front yards. Do they plan to sell the parts to get through their golden years? Additional Details Someone called me a stupid foreigner. Dude - I'm an American. I love the USA. Kansas sucks. I would be interested to hear from anyone who disagrees AND who has been to other places. If you have never left Kansas (and no going to KCMO isn't far enough) how would you know if it sucks or not? If most other places are better that would mean Kansas sucks! BTW - I don't know of any grass huts in Bangkok. It has a population of about 10 million people, has way better public transport, is far more cosmopolitan, and has the best nightlife in the world. Kansas is like the backwoods - I would be less surprised to see a grass hut here! The person who made the "grass hut" comment is clearly part of the redneck group - a lack of education shows! |

You're such an ignorant butthead! There's a lot you can do in Kansas.
By the way, there are a LOT of people who've never lived on a farm, owned livestock, own a Camaro or a tractor either! And the majority of people with 'real money' ARE slaves to their big houses and flashy cars.
Oh, and if you know who Paul Newman is, owned or still owns a home in the Topeka area. And Tom Cruise, when married to Nicole, was shopping for one here too.
So, PLEASE go back to Bangcrook, Bangkok. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
BTW, I have been to Colorado, Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, Nebraska, Oklahoma.....etc.
And if you're an American, why in the world are you going 'BACK' to Bangkok?
So I guess it's not just Kansas.....anywhere for you is gonna suck! |

Well, since you're determined that it sucks in Kansas anyway, why should I bother giving you ideas of what to do? BTW, I've lived here for almost 20 years, and have lived in New York, Atlanta, and LA, and love it here way more than those cities, and when I travel to those cities, I see why. We live way better here than people in those cities, because it costs so much less to live here. But you're determined to hate it here anyway, so what do I care. You're the ignorant one dude. |

You're an idiot for posting a question like this and expecting to get any helpful responses. I truly hope that your time here in our beautiful city sucks a$$. Sincerely, Holly of Midtown KCMO |

I think you're being a bit hard on Kansas. I lived there for 23 years, but since then I've lived in Ohio, Maryland, Australia, Texas and Florida. This means I have some places to compare it too.
People in Kansas can be quite generous and friendly. People anywhere will reflect back to you the attitude you approach them with. If you are angry, sullen, resentful, etc. then they aren't exactly going to embrace you.
Think about it. |

dude you can't judge Kansas unless youve been there years at time. Im a Kansan and Ive lived all over Kansas and personally dude you just have to get along with people here otherwise your gonna make yourself have a bad time. So you can shut up man. Cuz all those groups you just named arent like that here. What a JACKASS. |

OKAY you need to stop hatin!!!!
i live in Houston TX and every summer i go to Kansas and i think if you try to find some thing you like bout Kansas you might find something you like bout it. those rednecks sure do know how to throw a party if you know what i mean and BTW you have the definition of a redneck all wrong.
p.s. hope you have a good time
i also wouldn't dog on those hicks while your there |

As the other two replies allude, you're going to have to lose that attitude, my friend. Kansas City, the City of Fountains, has a multitude of things to see and do, but you won't be able to see them through your prejudiced fog.
Clear that up, the enjoy some barbecue - go to Gates, Stroud's ... all of them, go to the Plaza, the art museum, the Zoo. Go to a ball game.
Hey, you could even go to a City Council meeting; I hate to say it, but you might find some of your "own" there - WHINERS! But you get out of that funk, and I guarantee the find people of Kansas City will help you make those two weeks fly by. |

I have lived in three cities in Maryland, Massachusetts, Virginia, North Carolina, Nebraska, and Kansas. Obviously this means I have been out of Kansas. I still like Kansas, even if it is stuck in the middle of nowhere and scientifically proven to be flatter than a pancake. As to what to do in Kansas, it depends on where you are. And with your attitude you're not going to like what anybody suggests anyway, so maybe you should just sit in your hotel room for two weeks and ferment. |

Go ahead and go to Bancock and make sure you wear a gas mask to protect you from the polluted air and a set of earplugs to drown out the noise from the traffic especialy all the Tut-tuts makeing all that racket and belching out the polution. If you are stranded in Kansas take a hike south to Oklahoma because we don't cotten to your kind in these here parts. |

I find it interesting the statement you make. I don't know of any farms in Johnson County Kansas!!! The do have the highest per capita income of any county in the US. Maybe that is because there are so many "Professional types....that care only about status symbols...Urban criminals and stupid urban poor people...and Rednecks".
You are exactly the type of person that a popular Radio host likes to term the "flyover people". You flyover the area from coast to coast and don't see the people that live there. You really don't have a clue about anything you are talking about. I see you as a stupid foreigner that doesn't know any better.
This comes from a person who has traveled all over the US, lived in several states, and works off-shore. But chooses to make my home in the area you denegrate.
Your attiutude is quite pathetic and why Americans are generally hated the world over. You think you are superior to everyone else, when in fact it is your own ignorance that blinds you to all the possibilities in the world around you.
Hopefully, you will get out and find what Kansas and Missouri has to offer in terms of the people, their activities, and the life they live. Just because everything is crammed into three square miles, like it is in Thailand, does not make it so wonderful!!! |

Well, you are dead set on being miserable, but just for information, here are a few things to do in Kansas you can't do anywhere else:
Go the the Eisenhower museum in Abilene.
Visit the Garden of Eden in Lucas
See the diorama from the World Columbian Exposition at the KU Natural History Museum in Lawrence
Breathe some clean air
Talk to some real people
Go to the National Baseball Congress Tournament in Wichita if you are there in August.
I live in Texas now and love it, but you can't trash my native state and not hear about it.

Well, based on your descriptions of the people you meet in Kansas, there is nothing FOR YOU in see in Kansas.
When I was living in Kansas, Most of what I liked about Kansas was the people. I not sure where you are hanging out in Kansas, but most of the people I meet don't seem anything like you described.
<grin>
Maybe you should ask someone if they would take you snipe hunting or go visit the largest ball of twine.

Stay in Bangkok. I dont need people like you here to ruin my fun while i go clubbin. Thats all we need around here, some whacky foreigner who thinks their sh*t dont stink.
If you werent so stuck up you might have found something really fun to do here and there are plenty of places to go, and if you had a diffrent attitude or perspective maybe somebody would actually show you around here and you could have a good time.
I'll tell you what, with that attitude i sure aint gonna be that person. |

Ahhh... An old Thai saying: A fool and his ignorance are rarely parted.
First off you've given no indication where you'll be in Kansas. It's a big place... about 82,000 square miles big. Which square mile of the 82,000 will you be "stuck" to?
Second... I have no idea what you're interested in seeing/doing. Basically all you've done is whine and complain and bash a place I'm guessing you know little of or really care to know.
Third... Living life to its fullest is about opening your eyes and ears >>and mind<< to the possiblities around you. Kansas is full of possibilities. They just don't knock you over the head like the lights of Vegas or the Rocky Mountains. It's called s-u-b-t-l-t-y.
Fourth... I grew up in California (San Francisco Bay Area) and came to Kansas to go to college. I've stayed in Kansas but been back to California many times to visit friends and family. I've met my fair share of people addicted to greed, criminals and rednecks out there. I have a feeling you'll find people similar to this all over the globe.
Fifth... There is no perfect place. Bangkok is a shining symbol of the economic boom taking place in many East Asian countries but it has some of the worst traffic snarls in southeast Asia (even with the new innovations in public transportation). Air and water pollution there are rampant. The canals in parts of the city have become cess pools in some locations.
Sixth... If you're "stuck" in Kansas you have two options. You can continue to grouse and see the state through stereotypes that show you to be as bigoted and narrow minded as the people you're criticizing or you can see if there's something out there that might be of interest to you.
Here's a site with info on the state:

You can try some barbecue, it's really good. Also, if you're in the Kansas City area, you can drive over to World's of Fun in Missouri. I'm sorry you don't like Kansas, but can you please not insult it. Not everyone falls into those groups. Not all Kansans are rednecks and Criminals. You can also go to the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson (I think I spelled Hutchinson wrong) Also, the Rolling Hills Animal Preserve in Salina (It's a really great zoo) |

So sorry you feel that way...hopefully you'll see why Kansans like me enjoy living here!
Try:
Going to the Legends in western Wyandotte County- Kansas City, Kansas; Cabelas is a fun place to visit...even if you aren't into hunting and fishing. The Nascar track is across the street; Dave and Busters is a fun spot to go and there are many good restaurants in that area of the city as well.
Have you ever eaten at Arthur Bryant's? Now THAT is good BBQ...or try Gates- they are always ready to "hep you!" Near these are the ***** League Hall of Fame and the Jazz Museum. Travel a little from here and go on to see the Truman Library and even the Truman home in Independence, MO.
Visit Crown Center in Kansas City, MO...there are neat shops and great places to eat. This is near the Union Station that is a wonderful place to visit; also the Liberty memorial which honors WWI veterans. Eat at a restaurant atop the Hyatt and see the city as you revolve.
Go to World's of Fun or Ocean's of Fun amusement parks for a day. You will be sure to find SOMETHING to your liking there. Be prepared to get warn-out!
Stop by the City Market area; it's got great items for sale as well as quaint shops and neat restaurants and clubs. See the Steamboat Arabia and all its treasures.
Visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art...it's being renovated and has so much to see! This museum is not far from the Country Club Plaza. While there, take a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.
Go to a T-Bones baseball game; they are great fun for all....located in Wyandotte County (Kansas City, Kansas).
There are many fireworks shows on the fourth; two of our favorites are at College Boulevard in Corporate Woods and the other is at Shawnee Mission Park; usually the latter is coreographed to music on a local radio station.
Relax at Shawnee Mission Lake/Park; it's a wonderful spot where you may even go swim or paddleboat.
See! Kansas CAN appeal to you if you just give it a chance! I hope you enjoy your stay. |

You get what you give. If you're looking to have a horrible time, you'll get it, regardless of where you are. Besides, only boring people are bored.
You didn't say where you are going to be. What are your hobbies? If you let us know what area you're in or what you like to do in your spare time, then perhaps we can better suit our answers to help you out. |

WOW!!! Obviously you have not looked far enough. KCKS AND MO have lots of culture. Theater, ballet, orchestra, art museums... the city of fountains is a sister city to seville spain ( I have been there- to seville) KC is a lil seville. sure we dont have mass transit... it would be too costly for a city with less people per square mile ney... block, than say... NYC... just not economical to support. PS they have an airport, taxis, trains. Additionally, there is major league baseball and football and some hockey and soccer teams. Lots of good eatings....and quite frankly just regular friendly folks... as long as you are NOT too judgemental. We know how to have fun, perhaps you should just well, explore a little bit more. |

I am from Kansas and don't consider myself to be in any of your groups. I also am beginning to believe I was kidnapped by aliens at birth and I belong somewhere on the West Coast.
Most of Kansas does, in fact, suck. My best advice is to stick near our best stabs at civilization, those being KC and Wichita. |

You are completely correct. Kansas sucks. And the only reason Tom Cruise was in Topeka was that Nicole was in Menningers Psychiatric Clinic. Just grit your teeth and wait for you imprisonment to be over. And be glad it's only two weeks. |
