Seriously people need to shut up about the illegal immigrant population. They're not even included in censuses of the United States - so, even if they are flooding our gates, we can't even be sure as to how many there are as there isn't exactly a proven method of measurement, outside of random estimates. As for LEGAL immigrants, since there are quotas on most categories of immigrant visas, that's not exactly something one needs to worry about - most legal immigrants HELP this country, in terms of paying increased state tuition, working jobs that most Americans think they're "too good" for, and using their education to positively effect our economy (30% of the medical students in the United States are first generation immigrants - but I guess we don't need anymore of those, huh?) - additionally, the children of immigrants (like myself, a current graduate student and gainfully employed individual) show more promise than most fifteenth generation Americans. It astounds me that most answerers, in the New York section, no less, have such ignorant answers. Most likely because they're probably not from New York, have never been to Brooklyn, and wouldn't have the courage, motivation or ethic to move here anyways.
As for population decrease, the United States is increasing, but marginally in comparison to the third world and developing countries. We have abundant amounts of birth control methods, but what we haven't exactly mastered is how to drill into these teens, inner city residents and rural populations' heads who are reproducing like rabbits how to use said birth control methods. Abstinence is about as effective as castration, so I feel that education could go a long way in this country, whenever we should feel the need to start funding its improvement. It's proven - the more educated a person is, the less likely they are to reproduce at an early age, and to reproduce in vaster amounts. And, honestly you never know - Germany is seeing a negative growth in population, the UK and France aren't far behind, either. The US could easily be next. |
