QuestionMan

Would it be okay to hike with a 9month old at rocky mtn ntl park?

I knows it is sort of rare to see the bears and mountain lions where the public usually goes but how often is it really? any actual threat to people?

Good grief! Some of these answers....
There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with hiking with a 9 month old. As someone mentioned, you will obviously be using a back pack carrier. We've done it with our friends who have little ones all the time. It's great for them. There is nothing to worry about regarding bears/mountain lions. We've been not just hiking but back country camping there for years and have never encountered any. The kinds of easy trails you would be doing with a little one first of all don't go far enough in to encounter something and will be crowded enough that if you had any issues there would be lots of people along the way.
Go have fun!
For the record - to the person who thinks 9 month olds can "barely walk" - they don't walk at all.

Rogue Angel
you'll be fine from bears and mountain lions..there are many easy hikes that are only about a mile or less that lead to nice lalpine lakes surrounded by mountains--it'll be crowded as these easy hikes are popular with tourists but you cant exactly hike a 14'er with a 9 month old so your choices arte limited

I would take mine along. Life if life. You cannot always live in fear. But you have to be prepared for things to happen. Take enough food and snacks for them, water, sunscreen, hats, a baby carrier. Do not just go and buy one right off, try them out first. They get heavy, and get uncomfortable, but if try one out first it will pay off in the long run. I would let others know where I am going, and have a cell phone with me, and a first aid kit to. I wish you the best of fun, and travel on good trails and not steep ones. What an adventure for you child.

As far as wildlife, it's OK to take your 9 month old with you. What a lot of people don't realize or even forget is that Colorado is high altitude state. For some people it's hard to breath here. The further you go up altitude wise, the harder it will be to breath. I've been on top of Pikes Peak and had trouble breathing and I've lived in Colorado my whole life.

Sarah
It is vary rare to have any wild animal threat at the hiking trails so I would have no reservations about taking my nine-month-old along. In fact, I did that a lot when my kids were small. To be on the safe side, you probably shouldn't go alone, not because of wild animals, but any other unforeseeable incidents. Go with your spouse, friends, colleagues. That would be more fun. Be sure to have a good baby carrier. Have fun.

It would be fine to go hiking with a 9month old. But you will need a back-baby-carrier. (a backpack where you strap in the baby) and bring insect repelent and all of that kind of stuff. But of corse it is if you know your way around. Hope this helped! Toodles! =-D

it would be safe to go hiking with a nine month old child nothing dangerous could actually happen to your child

The fact that you are asking says to me that you have reservations about doing this. So my answer would be to not do it. The park isn't going anywhere, so perhaps it would be better to wait.

Sasha E
I personally think that hiking with a nine month old is a little young. What would happen if you got stuck somewhere, or lost and couldn't be found. You would have your nine month old child with you. That is a bit ridicolous if you really want my opionion.

I might be more concerned about altitude sickness. Every year, rangers in Rocky Mountain National Park treat countless park visitors with headaches, nausea, dizziness, and a host of other ailments. Many of the people they are treating are suffering from Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), a generic label applied to symptoms commonly experienced by people visiting high altitudes. The people treated by the rangers aren’t all rock climbers and mountaineers. Many of them are simply enjoying an easy hike or leisurely drive through the park with their family or friends. When traveling above 8,000 feet, everyone is susceptible to AMS.

Becky
I would not.
Bears
Lions
Sunburn
Altitude sickness
Fatigue
Dehydration

At 9-months--what will s/he really get from it?
Bears and lions can pop out an any time. The last time I was out, I saw bear paw tracks. I've never seen a bear or lion in the mountains, but have seen tracks. The fact is that they will grab up a baby or small pet in a heartbeat. And you would stand no chance if you are loaded down w/ a baby and smelly snacks.
Get a babysitter, enjoy the trip as adults. And take the kid when s/he is about 6 and can really enjoy it.

mernieinc
wow.. that's a tough hike for an adult, let alone a toddler who can barely walk.. good luck!!

StephenJ
Responsible parents probably wound't take the chance.
