Santa monica is much nicer (cleaner, prettier ect). There are things in both places that you are going to want to do with, or without a 20 month old. Both places have crazy people, but I feel like Santa Monica's crazys are much less harmless. The 10 freway ends in Santa Monica, and you can take it to La Cienica, which crosses Bevery, Sunset, and I am pretty sure Hollywood (If it does it would be before Sunset) at their nicest areas. |

Unless someone else can take care of the kid, why not?
Just keep in the stroller all safe and cuddly.
There is the beach, shops, hotels, Venice Boardwalk, so it's all cool.
There are millions of tourists with children. |

I'd say stay in Santa Monica. Much nicer in my opinion. If you're not careful in Hollywood, you'll wind up in transexual alley...lol. |

I am a Hollywood fiend and know all the restaurants and hotspots but you have a child so I'll try to keep that in mind. There are plenty of "kid-friendly" things to do there such as the beach, the pier with it's own amusement park, aquariums, etc. Hollywood, has a few sites and the Kodak theater area may stimulate the kid with all the bright lights but you are limited to what you can do with a child. Since it's only a few days and your child is too small to do much, I would consider Hollywood (The Renaissance Hotel is excellent) to absorb the atmosphere and stimulate the kid with all the bright lights. Great food there as well. |

Others have suggested that you stay in Santa Monica rather than Hollywood. That depends entirely on what you want to do. If you just want to lounge around, visit the Santa Monica Pier and get great ocean air, then stay in Santa Monica. Hollywood is very crowded with wealthy people as well as the homeless. Stay west of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland, and you will be with the tourists, and safer. Don't venture east of Highland Avenue on foot after dark. As was previously mentioned, you really need to have a car because distances are so great within the city limits. But do not expect to drive anywhere without a huge traffic jam. Wherever you go, traffic is a problem. Remember, in the greater Los Angeles area, every illegal alien has a car. The city was not built for such a large number of people. |

i agree with everybody, hollywood definitely is one of those "nice place to visit but i wouldn't want to live there with my 20-month-old-baby" places. =) |

Santa Monica is a better (quieter) place to stay and you can always drive into Hollywood to visit the walk of fame and all that. |

I'd go with Santa Monica. It is much more family friendly. |

L.A. is soooooo vague. There are high end places and total drug filled dives in L.A. Santa Monica is closer to the beach and most little ones enjoy the sand under their toes.
It really depends on what you plan on doing during your stay. |

No matter what you are going to do in L.A. - you're going to have to drive, so I always tell people it really doesn't matter where you "base your operations" I've lived in both places....and I'd choose Santa Monica, with or without a kid!! |

SANTA MONICA! haha. Hollywood is NOT a nice place to stay. It has the cool sites but its not a nice place to stay. I'm being kinda blunt but Hollywood isn't that pretty. And its really crowded. Santa Monica is just as crowded but a little bit nicer and the outdoor shopping by the beach is nice too. |
