Its not really a matter of seconds, its feet... because in differnet speed zones the timing is different say a turn is 500 feet away and in a 30 mile an hour zone would be differnet than a 55 mile an hour... Basically your turn signal should go on about 200 feet before the turn! |

Always signal before you make a turn or change lanes. It is important that other highway users know your intentions. The law requires you to signal a turn or lane change with your directional lights or hand signals at least 100 feet (30 m) ahead. A good safety tip is to, whenever possible, signal your intention to turn before you actually begin braking to make the turn. The required hand signals are shown. |

The one here in michigan is that you should signal when you are clear of drive ways. That way people don't think that you're turning into a driveway. |

You should signal at least 200 feet before turning.
Signaling Your Intention to Turn
Give a proper turn signal at least 200 feet before turning or changing lanes. If the speed
limit is 50 miles per hour or more, give a proper turn signal at least 300 feet before turning or
changing lanes. The safest type of signal is using the lighted signals that are standard equipment
on most vehicles. If, however, one or more of these signals is malfunctioning, you may use the
hand signals (except on driving tests) illustrated below:

It's not __ seconds!!
According to the NY DMV, you should activate your turning signal about 100 feet before you make a move.
I got this from the Learner's Permit manual.
Good luck! |

Five sounds good. Or, if there's one of those signs that indicate your turn is around the bend, I signal when, or a second or two before I reach it.
You don't want to signal too soon, you may confuse people or cause a ripple effect that will back up traffic. |

It has been a while since I took drivers ED...and it is different in whatever state you happen to be in. I do remember getting a booklet that had all the answers in it, didn't you get one of these? |

Depends on which state you're driving in. I would say that 5 seconds would be a safe bet though |

As a rule of thumb, I turn my signal on about 1 or 2 seconds before I start breaking for my turn. So, depending on how fast you are going, it would vary the amount of time the signal is actually on. |
