2 weeks in Vietnam in September? |
My bf and I will be going to Vietnam the first two weeks of September. We want to fly into Hanoi, go to Sapa, Halong Bay, then down to Hue, HoiAn, then to HCMC and the Mekong Delta. I am thinking of taking o/n trains when we can and only fly to places when we can't get tickets or are in a time crunch. My questions: 1) Is 2 weeks a good time allotment to get all of this done? We were also entertaining the idea of hopping over to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat, but this may be too ambitious for the two weeks. 2) How is train travel in VN? I went to mainland China last year. The first 2 of 4 trains were awful, but it's a fair exchange for a more authentic travel experience. We plan to reserve 2 nights hotel in Hanoi and book everything else after we get to VN. How hard is it to get o/n train tickets? Should we book the Halong Bay part before we leave so we can do Sapa right after since we need to take an o/n train for this? Sorry so long. Thank you! Additional Details Thank you for all your responses!
I only have two weeks vacation time off from work - can't extend it this year. I'm more of a nature enthusiast so prefer seeing Sapa than Asian another city. With the wonderful feedback you guys haven given me, I'm thinking of skipping the southern part for another time- HCMC, Meekong Delta, etc. This way I'll get a bit of train to get up to Sapa and fly the remainder of the areas. |

its not doable even if you're rushing like mad, sapa is an overnight train to and from ha noi, 2 nights in sapa and thats 4 days right there, a day in ha noi before you go , a day after you come back, a day trip to ha long.. and thats a week...not sure there is a plane to hue and you dont have time for the train.. so plane to da nang /hoi an 2 days there, train trip to hue.. 2 days there plane to sai gon, day trip to mekong..its too rushed... and if you have any tarvel problems it all over.. save sapa and mekong for another time... you'll be back
1st timers trip, ha noi, da nang /hoi an , nha trang, sai gon, 2 days in each place 3 days travel between [ take the overnight train ot plane] and you'll still have time for day trips out of each city including ha long , and mekong |

I wasn't going to post an answer since you have received what I consider to be excellent advice. But I see from your additional comments that you are a nature lover. In that case, I would strongly recommend that you set aside a couple of days to visit Cuc Phuong National Park. It will be well worth the trip.
You can google all the information you need as well as arrange accommodations. Also, here is a great site I found in this forum. It's a Viet railroad schedule along with current prices. http://www.seat61.com/
There is no need to book in advance, in fact, people usually end up paying more (for hotels) if they make reservations.
Enjoy your trip! |

Two weeks in Vietnam is not enough. There are so many places you have to see. I heard that you can fly is really inexpensive and much faster than train. |

two weeks? thats a bit short, i mean your visiting ALOT of places lol
wouldnt it seem like your rushing your trip a bit?
i was in Saigon and my parents and i planned a trip to Hanoi and dang, it took us 2 weeks to get there
[ by car tho, also we visited some of the other places along the way and stuff...]
and ummm...about the whole train/airplane dilema...i think you should pick airplane; its much faster.
have fun:] |

two weeks in vietnam is NOT enough. i spent 2 months there, but it's bcuz i got family there. but to visit...at least 3...the travel thing in vietnam isn't accelerated as the US. cars take forever becuz there are no traffic lights. and trains? well, it's not as accelereated as you would like to think. i doubt its even comfy. stick to flying. it saves major time, but need some planin. and bring a good amount of money. hold on tiight to all u got becuz lots of robbing and fraudin there. |

If you do an overview trip of Vietnam, you can cover all the places you listed within 2 weeks with an itinerary that maximises the limited time you have in Vietnam. I think you would need to fly in between places, e.g. Hanoi - Hue, and then Danang - HCMC. Alternatively, if you want to spend more time at each place, then it may make sense to visit South Vietnam on another trip, and just cover Central Vietnam (Hoi An, Hue) and North Vietnam (Hanoi, Halong Bay and Sapa) on this trip. South Vietnam can be combined with Angkor Wat on your next trip, please. If you need help, feel free to drop us an email at holidays@sparrowtravels.com, please. Thanks |
