A Question about Vietnamese Cultural Customs? |
I am starting a nonprofit for those who have lost their children. I am not sure how appropriate it is to ask so I apologize if it isn't appropriate. The answers can be based on current customs or older ones. Either way.
Here are my questions:
1. Are there any customs to keep a pregnant woman or baby protected?
2. Are there any customs that occur after an infant death specifically?
3. What about other regular customs after a death?
Thank you for anyone who has knowledge on this and is willing to answer. The answers I'm sure will help others as well as myself. Additional Details Perhaps I should clarify. I am starting an organization in America. And I want to compile a list of cultural customs that would help those who have lost their child. Adding to American customs would help expand the ideas of people to memorialize their children and help them in their grieving. |

Vietnam has very strong laws protecting pregnant mothers and children.
Vietnam was the FIRST country to sign the UN's "Rights of a Child" act.
Asian mourning customs are different than Western. However, a loss of a child in any culture is still heartbreaking.
Regarding your program, I have no idea how or why you would be doing such a thing, unless it has religious overtones (i.e., some Christian associated thing) in which case I would advise you to NOT do it as the government is highly sensitive about these things...
There are already many programs in place here to assist and help pregnant women and children. You might want to cooperate with an established organisation instead.

With the greatest respect, I would suggest (with regard to Vietnam and the Vietnamese) that your time and funds may be better spent. You cannot hope to gain a valid and comprehensive understanding of the cultral significance of these issues from a post on YA. There are many worthwhile charities operating in Vietnam that deserve support and patronage and offer real rather than intangible (or dare I say self-serving) benefits. |
