$5000 (AUD) is more than enough. You just need to spend about $50/day (let say if you live in a hotel and pay for $30/night) for every daily expenses -> $1500/month. With the remaining $3500 you can do a lot of things, including shopping. Everything here are cheap :) Note that the standard living of people here in a city is just about $300 -> $400/month (they already have the houses and most of them own the houses).

The best time to visit depends on what you want to do here. But basically if you want to visit the northern part of Vietnam then you shouldn't come in the middle of summer (because it will be very hot and lots of rain); the southern part weather is better and have only 2 seasons so you can visit anytime.

Interesting places are:
Ha Noi
Ha Long Bay
Hoi An
Hue
Nha Trang (beautiful beach)
Ho Chi Minh city (Sai Gon)
Da Nang
Da Lat
...
(Sapa is also a good place, but we just have a big flood near that area, so that atm I'm not sure about this)

it would be enough for 3-4 months, i was there in feb and march for 2 months, it cost me when i was there, $3000, incl food, drink, travel, tours, hotels and shopping. i stayed in good budget hotels, the dearest one was $25aus and the cheapest one was in dalat at $5 a night, and as good as the dearest hotel. you dont say what level of luxury you want when there, you can spend $150 a night for hotels if you want them. i suggest you get a lonely planet book before you travel to research vietnam a little first. best highlights were, halong bay 2nights-3 days, sapa, 4nights, hoi an,3 days, dalat 3 days, nga trang, 3 days, hcm city 3-4 days, hanoi as a starting place for halong bay and sapa, maybe 3days if time permits mekong delta 2 nights 3 days, you will need US$ clean and not worn notes for your hotels and tours and a debit card to access vietnamese dong for everything else. i enjoyed vietnam very much and will go back again.

I agree with Serendipitusrex, 5000 AUD is plenty. The suitable time depends on your interest. If you want to contemplate famous place, you should go to Vietnam in September – November. The weather is not too cold, not too hot. Everything will be more beautiful. If you want to know about the culture, you can enjoy February in Vietnam, because it is Tet holiday, there are many special events at that time.

In Vietnam, the best place I love is Ha Long Bay. There are many other interesting places such as Nha Trang, Sapa, Da lat, Hoi An (Quang Nam), Da Nang, Tam Dao, and Hanoi.

If you know a little about Vietnam and don’t want to have luxury hotel, I think it is really cheap. About 2 – 3 AUD for a meal in popular restaurant (in fact, I often pay 1AUD for my meal, but I’m a Vietnamese girl, maybe you need more rice and food :P). If you want to eat Western food, it maybe more expensive, about 8 – 12 AUD (if you go to restaurant, but if you only go to supermarket and buy bread, milk, butter,… it will be cheaper ). A room in a popular hotel may cost 15 AUD a day.
You should go by bus, because it is only 3000 VND (1 AUD = 14400VND). You can buy a Hanoi map with the list of bus. If you need more help, please contact me on ruydy_babet@yahoo.com (no fee :)) ) Hope I can help you!

Good time to be in Vietnam is at the end of the year (Sept - Nov). The weather is good both in the South (no more rain) and in the North (light chill breeze). It's hard to say must-see places for you since some tourists hate crowded places, others like. I'll name some here with the style beside for you selection.

A. North:

1. Hanoi: the capital, beautiful camera spots available for ancient style - Old Quarter, bustling at day, silent at night, many lakes and trees, beautiful autumn in Sept-Nov, cool weather with a bit chill, smell-good-streets (ask for the "Hoa Sua" - Milk flower tree along some streets) - 2 to 3 days

2. Halong Bay: a should-go, few hours by car from Hanoi, heritage of the world, bizarre stones above sea. I think that you have well-known about this place since EVERY foreigner comes here on their trip. 2 to 3 days

3. Hai phong - Tuan Chau Resort/Cat Ba Island: nice island, resort, water music heard to be more interesting than that of Singapore (I've never tried), nice beach (1-2 days only if you have more time)

4. Sapa: 8 hour by train from Hanoi, should-go, mountainous town, ethnic market with pattern blanket and other stuffs, trekking is great (1 or 2 days trip available), tranquil atmosphere but very crowded at the market. 2 to 3 days or more if you want to go to the border VN-China

B. Central:

5. Hue: ancient capital, a lot of mausoleums, Imperial Palace, poetic scenes (2 days)

6. Da Nang - Hoi An town: calm, old, nice view. Can sun bathe at Cua Dai beach (2 days)

C. South:

7. Hochiminh City: busy, never sleep, good place for shopping, not much sights but nice place to relax with good services (spa, hotel, shopping...), 2-3 days

8. Mekong Delta: fruit gardens, down river trip, natural tour brings you fresh air and nice experience. 1 day tour available from Hochiminh City but should spend 2 to 3 days here for more views.

9. Dalat: 7 hours by car from Hochiminh City, mountain city, no ethnic women like in Sapa, big lake (volcano mouth, I think, heard once but no so sure), enjoy boat riding on the calm lake, romantic pine forest, foggy, cold at the end of the year. Nice place to relax. (3-4days)

10. Nha Trang: 10 hour by train from Hochiminh City, beach city, one day boat tour to islands is great (3-4 days)

11. Phu Quoc Island: natural beach, not so many tourists, fresh seafood

Expenses: 5000$ is plenty for backpacker but just enough for those who enjoy staying in better hotel than budget ones.
- Hotel: budget - 12-20$/double/night
3 star - above 40$/night
5 star - above 170$/night
- Transportation:
+ Longest domestic flight (Hanoi - Hochiminh City - 2 hour): around $110/way
+ Airports: Hochiminh, Hanoi, Hue, Danang, Haiphong, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc (and more)
+ Trains: longest journey: around 60$/way
+ Cars: various prices according to car range and journey. Sinh's Cafe is good open tour bus.

- Food and drinks: normally 10$/day when you eat in small restaurants or at street vendors, cost more in restaurants

- Shopping: if you want to spend you money quickly, Vietnam has now big brands like LV, Marc Jacobs... for you (just kidding, don't mind me)

Hope this help you out in detailing your coming trip to Vietnam

When I go on vacation (to anywhere, really) I actually enjoy the everyday lifestyle that the people have rather than the tourist attractions. I've been to Vietnam and I really like walking through the outdoor marketplaces they have in Saigon. They sell really interesting foods, clothes, souvenirs, etc. It's like a street fair, only it's more cultured. Be careful with your valuables and money, though!

Your $5000 should be more than enough. We paid $30 US a night in HaNoi for a great hotel with breakfast. Stayed with relatives in Hue and SaiGon so not up on the prices there. I'd check tripadvisor.com they have a great forum on Vietnam with many good tips. We enjoy October in Vietnam; but with our little one in school we visit every summer in June. Cheers C

$5000 AUD is plenty. September - February is probably my favorite time to go to Vietnam.

There is so much to see and do there and I am not just talking about the options in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.

One of the best things to do in Vietnam is to go shopping in Hue.

Take photos with you of clothes you like, show it to the vendor in the stores in Hue. Stroll through the store and select your fabric. She will measure you up, charge you USD $20 and you will have an academy award worthy dress in 24 hours.

Suits for guys. I got my leather jacket there. You can get anything made up clothing wise. It's great.

Also - spend a couple of days relaxing by Halong Bay. Make sure you spend a night in the bay on a junket, sooo much fun. Danang is great. Just north of Hanoi are the hill-tribe regions and worth seeing as well. :)

First you have to define when and where you will come in Vietnam? I ca suggest you if this is your first time in Vietnam. You can have a tour in the North from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay and Sapa... Or the tour in the Middle, or the South. Depend which area you would like to come, you can choose the best time. For example, you can come on summer if you go to the Middle because there are a lot of beautiful beaches here but if you choose the North, i recommend you that you should come to in the fall because you will see the pretty view in mountain and bay best in the fall. And depending on your choice the cost will be different respectively. But with 5000 AUS, I guess it is enough for your flight, lodging without shopping. If you need any information, send me an email. i will help you within my ability

I believe December-January is good because the weather is cooler, however if you are travelling in the Central or North, be sure to pack some warm clothes. It was extremely chilly!! Also, if you are in VN especially during X-mas or New Year; the atmosphere is fantastic in the South, imagine beautiful lights, red and green ribbons wrapped around tall trees, and HCM city folks cruising around in their motorbikes on X-mas eve. You should book a tour around the country to the main highlight destinations because the country is very diverse...
I believe domestic airfares are around $150 or less and you would be making a few trips so work that out.... Expenses will depend on how you like to spend money in regards to food, transportation and accomodation. Taxis are good way to get around, however I recommend you should walk/explore the place.
Go shopping, eat and splurge in Vietnam! Nguyen Trai Street in District 1 had some excellent quality clothes, shoes etc and some good eateries Try 'Quan An Ngon' in HCM. In Hoi An (central) eat 'Cau Lau', be sure to choose the correct shop. (they have heaps of comments hanging on the wall). If you have time, try cycling on the Hai van mountain(central)--it's spectacular. Lastly, one thing to do: just marvel at the old charming buildings and ancient homes.

September & October is the best month, good weather.
5k aussie is more than enough, everything is very very cheap in Vietnam, I was in Cambodia and Vietnam for a week, the whole trip cost me $500 us dollar including shopping.
Places to go :
Ho Chi Minh City
Musuem - Ghu Chi tunnels - Mekong Delta tours - Russian Market - Night Market - Kau Dai Temple
