While there might be others, I know this hotel very well.
Giant Dragon Hotel on Pham Ngu Lao Street. It is on the safe edge of the 'back packer' district of HCMC. It is about 400 metre walk to Ben Tanh Market.
Most inter city buses stop just across the street.
At Giant Dragon, you can get a corner room that has a queen size bed and two singles. Breakfast is included. Normal price is near $30 a night, but you can haggle and negotiate that price down considerably if staying a few nights. In November of 2008, I was staying there and a family I spoke to had one of those large corner rooms and were paying $24 a night.
It is 2 star rating, clean, comfortable with very friendly and honest English speaking staff.
If you stay there, you will meet one of the staff who is a wonderful guy. He is a very short muscular fellow about 40 years of age and smiles non stop. He goes out of his way to help you. His name is Tut, and many guests call him King Tut. Another staff member named Op who is in his late 20's is very cheeky and likes to make practical jokes with you.
The senior/main receptionist (can't remember her name) is drop dead gorgeous wearing traditional dress. |

Check out hostelworld.com. They have a lot of modest small hotels and rooms for rent. Plus, you can see other people's reviews and book online. |

For Hanoi I suggest Golden Sun Hotel. It is very central.just around the corner from the lake, and a great hotel to stay in. If you can get the family room it is large enough I think for 4.Email and ask. It is 3 star but very nice, with everything you need. The staff are wonderful, and they have a fantastic breakfast. All hotels in Vietnam include breakfast.
