Antimalarials for Vietnam? |
Hey, just completing a geography tourism assignment. I have to design my own itinerary and budget for an overseas trip. I have to include medicine in my budget, and im unsure as to what medicine to use (for decent, all round health cover) and how much such medicine costs.
I know about mefloquine, and will include it in medicine to take for my Vietnam trip, but is it really that commonly taken? It seems pretty nasty.
Would anyone be able to shed some light on the price of mefloquine (3 weeks?)

Your doses of Mefloquine could be totally benign or kick your B*tt. Realistically, I don't know anyone who takes malaria meds here in Vietnam. Most of the areas it is just not needed and I have traveled to all parts of the country without taking a thing. No problems!!
As far as other meds that you should take on overseas trips.
here you go.
Typhoid, polio, tetanus/diphtheria, hepatitis A and B.
Yellow fever is recommended in the equatorial African states but not necessary for Vietnam.
You will find that your local health department will be able to provide all these meds at moderate prices.
But remember, You can get all these meds at a tenth of the price in Vietnam itself. Medical costs here are really low and the Hospitals are pretty good. Thailand is noted for health care and has a large medical tourism industry. Cambodian and Laotian medicine is a joke and you should always carry quality medical insurance if you go to these countries in case of evacuation. A med evac from cambodia to Bangkok can run as high as $25000 or more.
It pays to take a little extra precaution. |
