All three of these are five star. I have stayed at Hilton and Daewoo; both offer a lot. I think the Hilton food is a bit better than the Daewoo. I really don't know about the Sofitel Metropole.

City Center hotels are really nice and the rates are per your request.
Dan Chu Hotel, 29 Trang Tien Street from US$34
Guoman Hotel, 83A Ly Thuong Kiet St. from US$69
Hilton Opera, 1 Le Thanh Tong St. from US$117
Sunway Hotel, 19 Pham Dinh Ho St. from US$62
Thuy Tien Hotel, 1C Ton Dan St. from US$33

TheDan Chu hotel was actually nice during a week-long business trip. I still went to the Hilton to have dinner, since the clients were paying for the tab. Now, the Guoman Hotel is exquisite, I was truly amazed; and the price is nineteen dollars above your desired price. But the food and service are actually great.

Sofitel Metropole Hanoi - Hanoi, Vietnam - - from $124.00
Hilton Hanoi Opera - Hanoi, Vietnam - - from $75.00
Hanoi Daewoo Hotel - Hanoi, Vietnam - - from $84.00

When checking for Asia hotels online, I always go to http://www.asiahotels.com . It can sort hotels by country, by city, by price, or by star rating. Here are the ones I saw that fit your needs:

1. Chain First Eden Hotel Hanoi (3 Stars)
3 A Phan Dinh Phung Street
USD 32 and above

2. Heritage Hotel Hanoi (3 Stars)
625 La Thanh Road Hanoi
USD 38 and above

3. Golden Key Hotel Hanoi (3 Stars)
65 Quan Su Street Hanoi
USD 42 and above

4.Asean International Hotel Hanoi (3.5 Stars)
8 Chua Boc Street Doang Da Hanoi
USD 45 and above

I'm sure there are still lots more, when are you planning to visit? Because rates vary with dates as well. Have fun on your trip! ;)

sure, plenty. if you go to the old town "pho cuu" there you will find the tourest area[ back pack area] many mini hotels , clean and safe[ some on the small side].single rooms can be had for around $10, dbl from $12 and up.. you can also negotiate the price a little if you plan on staying 2-3 days or more especially if you let the hotel do some of your travel arangements[ tours, train tickets etc] my favorite in the "classic" on nguyen ngoc luong street. and if they dont have a room there are 3,4 ,5 other nice places on that corner. in just about every city in viet nam you can find rooms for $12- $80.... and in sai gon you can go as high as $2,500 a night. wherever you go check out the room before you commit.

Go to Hanoi and don't worry about accommodations until you get there. Find a nice three story walk up around the very beautiful west lake area. The rates for a very comfortable room are no more than $20 and you can find a place for $12 if you really look. These places are well furnished, clean and have a hot shower and air conditioning. The staff is always friendly and accommodating.

The taxi drivers at the air port will assist you in finding a great place. They do get a commission i believe for bringing travelers to their hotels, but that's normal business.

Enjoy Hanoi. It's one of my favorite cities
