walking through Vn, eh?
like from one end to the other or just around the local area? it's about 1700kms long, so you might be walking for a bit. that said each town is great to walk around and the countryside is amazing, from flat to mountains.
for serious walkers you should go inland to the Da Lat, Pleiku and Kon Tum, or up north to Sapa, Dien Bien Phu and Lao Cai as these are mountainous areas with great scenery and history.
just a note, don't be too paranoid about water. sure you shouldn't drink from taps and ice may be a bit iffy, but to be honest I lived there for 5 years, took about 1000 people on tours and no one ever got sick from using ice or washing their face with it for that matter either.
as for the food, it's some of the most delicious you'll encounter in asia, but give you palet time to adjust coz if you're used to western food then it needs to learn how to taste the subtleties of Vn flavours. each dish is different with many hidden flavours just waiting for you to enjoy. don't be a fool like many travellers and try Vn once and think it's boring and then hit the junk food. instead stick to Vn food for a week and i guarantee you that you'll fall in love.
every town in Vn has something to offer, even if it doesn't seem like it on the surface. to get the most of your travels speak as much with the locals as possible as they are Vn's hidden treasure and they are more than willing to be helpful and friendly with you.
theft can be a problem, but use common sense and only take out what you're prepared to lose and you'll be fine.
finally, if you've got a guide book then use it just as a guide and NOT your bible, else you'll end up doing what it says and miss out on discovering things on your own.
enjoy... |

Elaborate your question.
I went from Hanoi to Ho Chi Mihn (2 week trip) and my favourite places were Nha Trang and Hoi Ann.
Nha Trang is where all the young people go it's like a very cheap Hawaii haha. Don't support Monkey Island or those islands where they beat the animals and force them to perform for tourists though.
Hoi Ann is where people go to get tailored clothes dirt cheap and made ready within hours. I nearly got a pair of real leather boots made but I didn't have enough time left too :(
Visit Ha Long Bay. Seriously it is the most beautiful, serene place and the Junks (boats) are so cool to ride on.
Be very careful with your money and possesions as people will steal and scam as much as possible. Tip well as these people are dirt poor and $10 to them is like 2 months pay. Be careful what you eat and drink, don't drink the water or you'll be very sick. Remember not to gurgle water in the shower or let it any where near your face. Make sure all bottles are sealed before drinking. Don't use ice. It has probably been on the ground outside and cut up with a rusty, dirty saw. If you want to compliment a Vietnamese woman tell her that her skin is very fair, white.
Also I didn't really like Vietnamese food, it's very watery and bland.
If you have any questions about it you can ask me I'll be glad to help :) |
