I would also recommend the old quarter. It has cheap, but nice, hotels and many places to eat. There is also markets so it's quite lively. Plus, if you ever find a hotel booked out, they most probably have another one just around the corner. |

Come to Tam Thuong lane on Hang Bong Street in Hanoi, you will find many good but cheap hotels/hostels.
Or you just come to the Old Quarter (Hang Bac or Luong Ngoc Quyen Street), you will find a good hotel from $8/nite.
