Just want to adds on to the answer above:
Recommendation: You should not wear fancy clothes, just wear like the native does. If you want to reject some one from the street, whose trying to sell you some thing that you don't like, just say NO and NO smile and one more thing: do not use eye contact, Vietnamese will think you look down on them when you look straight to their eye.
Cab and motorcycle driver is the one who know most of everything in the city, ask them whatever you want, but don't trust them, verify first.
One more experiment: before you do some thing, look at what the local do, then do just the same. If they do not leave tip on the table, then no tip. If they not line up to buy the tickket, then ale hup, go for it before the ticket all gone.
Bus, train station and open market is the place that have most of the thief, look for your pocket all the time when you go there.
Hanoi is cleaner, more peaceful, and the traffic cop is much better than Ho Chi Minh city, but HCM city more friendly. |

you mean lately?
good exp >>> viet nam is beautiful, with many nice sandy beaches, warm water (south china sea), low lying coastal regions, and forested mountains. the people are generally great, the food is out of this world.
bad exp >>> there was a nasty war going on when i was there.
suggestion >>> just like then, stay in the south. this from friends who have been more recently. hanoi is uptight (like nyc). ho chi minh city much more friendly.
if you go >>> don't miss the opportunity to zip over to laos (where i have been much more recently). vientiane is the worlds most peaceful city.

yes,
good experiences=good foods, nice people, and beautiful places.
bad experiences=cheaters if you are not careful when buying on the streets, the corrupt cops and officials.
any advice=bring credit cards(Visa is popular over there),cheap hotels can be at 15-25dollars if you stay away from the center, and they do speak some english over there. |
