Best shopping in Hanoi?

I'll only have a couple of days in Hanoi, Vietnam but I was hoping to find some good places to do some shopping.
Mostly I'm looking for clothing- designer brands, knockoffs.. all fair game as long as I can get some new stuff and not spend too much money. I'm not really looking for jeans that cost $300 normally and $200 there... more for things that you can get seriously excited about purchasing, if that makes any sense.

Depends on the area near the hotel you will stay, and depends on what types of clothes or stuffs you want to buy.

But basically you can buy stuffs near Hoan Kiem Lake (there are a lot of streets you can find small shops where they sell clothes and other cultural stuffs). If you look for a big shopping mall near Hoan Kiem Lake, you can go along Ba Trieu Street (or take a taxi if you don't want to walk, it's a little bit long) to VINCOM (or VINCOM Plaza perhaps). For Hanoi people, one of the good choice with more reasonable price compare to VINCOM is BigC Plaza, but it's far from Hoan Kiem Lake.

Note that in Vietnam, everything is cheap so don't worry too much ^^ However, in the small shops or for the things they sell on the streets, I think it's possible to bargain.

you serious?? just go 2 the markets!! the old quarter stuff like shoe street, silk street, etc. i bought 3 silk wallets for 70c each!! converse for $15, paintings for $20...everything is cheap!
& don't buy anything from nike, adidas, etc shops - they're priced the same as you buy stuff at home. try on something to see what size fits then go looking for rip-offs :)
just get yourself a taxi and then wander. be careful though, some places are only going to sell you something for expensive prices because you're not Vietnamese...so bargain hard and walk out if you have to. walking out usually makes them come down $5-10.

when you are in / near public markets, go upstairs - if there is an upstairs. The food is usually on the street level and the cloth / clothing upstairs. There are other alternatives as well, ask around when you arrive - I was not a "knockoff" buyer when I was there, so I can't be more helpful, sorry.
