Bringing laptop to hanoi?
i will be staying at a 3 star hotel, how likely is it that the hotel will have internet access ?
The first question is: Why are you taking your laptop? Internet cafes abound in most tourist areas of Vietnam. And some hotels have desk tops available. If you want to check emails and keep in touch with home just use these facilities.
If you're taking it for business reasons I would plan on using is as a "stand alone" unit. You might want to get a flash drive of some sort to transfer data and store pictures, etc. from your laptop to the desk top to send home.
If you're thinking "WiFi", I don't think so. It's been over a year since I've been there. But I don't think they've changed that quickly. I hear from people regularly and haven't heard any different.
Some hotels provide free interent. Otherwise it's about US$.25 an hour. Most connections are dial up speed, but they advertise DSL. Ask around.
Good Luck!

Likely but you still need to check. A 3-star hotel like the Sedona Suite Hotel (West Lake) or even a 2-star hotel like the Classic 1 Hotel on Ta Hien St. both have Internet access. However, many other 3-star and 2-star properties do not.

I would think your chances are not good, I will be traveling to Hanoi in a couple of weeks and was looking for internet access in hotels myself. Some four star hotels do not have access, but most five star hotels seem to have access, probably not cheap as well. If you know what hotel you will be staying at, you can always check their website, or e-mail the hotel. I do know that many coffee houses have free wi-fi, with purchase of course. Good luck.
