Can I use US coins in Vietnam or only bills?

I don't live in the US, but have a pocketful of US change. I am traveling to Vietnam next week and would like to know if I could use the US coins. My apologizes if this strikes anyone as an inane question.

No, I don't think you can use it here. I am a Vietnamese living in Saigon (HCM city) and so far I haven't ever seen any exchange place nor bank accept coins of any foreign currency.

us coins are not really used as currency in vn however they may be used as barter in a trade.. and i know children love to receive them as gifts .. especially in hoi an where there children will try and resell them to other tourists

Do not bother to bring any coins as they do not deal with them. Bring new bills. The condition of paper money is important because they will not want to accept tattered bills. Also bring crisp $100 bills to exchange into the VN Dong for best rates as some places might not accept US money.

I think its only notes. I remember only being able to get some $50 or $100 Australian notes in the rural areas though. Noot sure about urban sprawls.

I have a VN friend that has asked me for a couple of specific US coins, but other than that, they are rather useless here. I have seen in some airports, I don't recall where, charity boxes where travelers are asked to drop their spare change. I imagine they get enough coins to make it worthwhile for the charity to go through the hassle of changing the coins into usable currency.

Nope, foreign coins are not usually accepted anywhere but in the country where they are issued and cannot be exchanged at banks or currency exchanges either, the main reasons are simply because of their low worth and high weight. The only people that they may be of value to is somebody is returning to the US.

KP
No mate. Change it to dollar bills and easy for you to carry too..

No, sorry. You can use it, but VNmese don't use it.

Sean
sorry that u can not use the US coins in VN. Because the VNese do not like to use the coin much, they prefer paper money

Ng A
Save it! In VN clean or new $100 bills will get you the best exchange rate. Older, smaller, marked up bills will get you alittle less. Coins are good for souvenirs only.

bulebenar
I've never been to Vietnam, but I have been to Thailand and Indonesia and I know in those places you cannot use foreign coins, so I doubt you can in Vietnam (or anywhere else outside of the U.S. or Canada).

(You can use U.S. coins in Canada, but not the other way around.)
