Can anyone recommend the top must-see places to see in Hanoi?

Top 10+ Places must see in Hanoi:
(arrange them in distance order, all of them are worth to see :)

1 Temple of Literature - ~1000 years old National University, very well known, all foreign presidents visit Vietnam must see it first. (I've ever lived in a house which close to Van Mieu (1) for a long time)
2 National Fine Arts Musem (close to 1)
3 Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum & Ho Chi Minh museum (near 2)
4 One Pillar Pagoda (next to 3, a strange pagoda)
5 Army Museum (all objects on display will tell you all, near 3)

6 Hoan Kiem Lake (or Sword Lake, if 1 is compared with the mind , 6 is like Hanoi's heart)
7 St. Joseph's Cathedral (in old quarter, beautiful area)
8 Old Quarter (center, many hotels & backpackers, numerous hidden charm's not been discovered ;)

9 National History Museum, a great of interestingness to learn about Vietnam's 4000-year history.
10 Opera House (nice architecture, especially at night)

11 Ethnic Minority Museum , very fascinating, must see, lots of foreigners.

10+ West Lake, Hanoi Old Citadel, Bat Trang ceramic village, Pagodas, Thang Long Water Puppet Theater, Hoa Lo Prison are worth to see as well ...

there're many hotels in Old quarter, you can hire a cheap place easily, price to be negotiated, ~12$/day. I don't live near there so i can't give you detail.

Vietnam in general and Hanoi in particular are safe, old quarter's not except, moreover near the centre.

Hanoi is a old city with 1000 year history. However, there are not many things to see in Hanoi. So I suggest those:
- Ho Chi Minh Complex
- Temple of literature
- Water Puppet Show
- Cyclo tour in the old Quarter
- History Museum
- Ethonology Museum
- Try Hanoi Beer
- Try Hanoi street food
- Extension to Bat Trang, But Thap Pagoda, Bac Ninh traditional art village
- Extension to Van Phuc silk village

I'd say Gossip has your list down pat. Think you should also check out some of the great bia gardens, that is if you enjoy beer. Great food can be eaten there for a very reasonable price.

All area's in Hanoi are safe. Great place to visit. We visit there every summer. Cheers C

the airport, jail, bus station, etc.........never been to Hanoi, so don't know
