Vietnam is very much East Asian in tradition, but geographically South East Asia. Many are Buddhist or Christian, or non-religious. They predominately practise in ancestor worship and follow Confucion etc..Vietnam is like any society so you have all sorts of profession. Business people, journalist, politicians, police, accountants, doctors, tourism staff, shop keepers and teachers make a big bulk to serve the 80 mil plus population. Vietnam also has big industries which manufacture goods (electronics, shoes, furniture...) ,meat, seafood etc. People who live in the country will cultivate their land and sell veges and fruits. If they live by the sea or river they'll work in the fishing industry. People who are skilled and usually poor will produce arts and crafts or have mixed business. People who previously worked for the government receive an aged pension. People are not penniless b/c the government establishes a lottery program-where poor people go around selling lottery tickets :D Hope this helps!

Ed pretty much has it correct. If you want more information, the Vietnamese government has websites in English if you want accurate statistics.

Oh, and for the record, Christianity IS recognised and operating with no problem. The biggest ones are in Hanoi and HCMC.

Socialist republic, 86.1 million people.

GDP US$3,300 per capita.

Market reforms, inward investment over 20 years, manufacturing, IT, high tech sectors are fasting going. Asia's third largest oil producer. Nuts and rice biggest export crops. Declining poverty year on year for over 18 years.

Chinese, Japanese, Russian, French, German, Czech and Polish are all popular second languages, with English rapidly becoming the lingua franca of choice.

Buddhism (85%), Christianity (8%)

As for the role of Christianity, Izzy's got it right. Everywhere I went in my travels in Viet Nam, there were (Catholic?) churches. EVERYWHERE! Many churches!

The primary sources of income are agricultural, such as rice farming.

Primary religions range from Buddhism to Confucianism. Christianity is not formally recognized and allowed.

The form of government is communistic.
