Can you rent a car in Thailand & drive to HCM City Vietnam?

Are there any highways linking Bangkok to HCM City Vietnam? and what are the proper visas to cross from Thailand to Vietnam?

You need a Vietnam driver permit to drive a car in Vietnam, and Vietnam does not accept an international driver permits as equal. Driving in Vietnam and most of Southeast Asia is much different than driving anywhere else in the world. Trust me - You don't want to attempt it...

If, hypothetically, you have the proper driver permits, visas and ignore my warning, there are roads that connect Thailand to Vietnam by way of Cambodia or Laos. Maintenance and pavement of such roads are questionable. I believe there is a maintained highway between Phnom Phen (???), Cambodia and Saigon. That in mind, I would take the Southern route. The journey could take two to three days so pack a good lunch!

No, it's not possible. The authorities will never allow cars to cross borders. You have to park it at the immigration/customs on Thailand border. Then you cross to Cambodia or Laos side. Then you have to rent a car again once in Laos or Cambodia. In the same way, you cannot take a car to cross from Laos or Cambodia to Vietnam.

i don't really know but i doubt it. i have never seen a foreign plate on any vehicle in vietnam. in addition, vietnam charges a 100% duty on the importation of cars. not only that, but you would have to find the appropriate insurance to travel from country to country. my advice is to talk to an experienced viet travel agency.
as far as highways go, there are paved highways but don't expect the autobahn or anything close. imagine a badly paved road 2 or 4 lanes wide with no divider. i think your best bet will be to take a bus trip to see the countyside or hop a plane.
as far as visas go. you will definately need a vietnamese tourist visa. as far as laos or cambodia, the only time i've travelled there was for shopping at the border and we didn't need one. but we never cleared customs in either country. however, i'm sure you will need one to cross through the country since visas are an important source of revenue and control for the governments. again, ask a travel agent to be sure.
good luck!

hey dude, before crossing from Thailand to Vietnam, you should first drive through Cambodia
moreover, you can't drive a car like that in VN, you need to have some permits, and as tourist, it's impossible to get that
forget it or do it by motorbike

Rantal car in Thailand can't clear customs at Cambodian border (Aranya Pratheet-Poipet). If you have your own car, go to Embassies of Cambodia and Vietnam in Bangkok to get two original laissez passer (pass permit). From Bangkok to Aranya Pratheet, get on outerring road directing to Chuchensao, Sakeo and Wathana Nakorn to get to Aranya Pratheet. Clear customs then go to Poipet, Sisophon (National Rd 5) to get to Phnom Penh. P/P to HCMC easy to go. Duration: Bangkok to Aranya Pratheet (4 hrs) Aranya Pratheet to Poipet to clear customs, it will take 2-3 hrs inside customs due to their bureaucracy. Poipet to P/P (6hrs), P/P to HCM (6-7hrs) Caution Rd condition is bad, a lot of flat tyre. broken springs and cracks of windshield. Just in case, you'd better be armed for Bandits. In cambodia, never ever get into fields, landmines still involved. Never try driving alone. Do not take a lot of cash with you. T/C is recommended. Prepare a little amount of cash (100-200 US) for jeopardized case. Thailand n Vietnam, security is much much better than that of Cambodia. And never drink water, even bottled water (sometime fake water) and do not eat cube ice. Water must be prepared in Bangkok. 2 yrs ago I did the same with rental car and surrendered at Thai border. Try it! it's amazing if you can.

No. The roads over there are not like interstates here, it's very complicated, and it'll take twice the time you think. If you're from the U.S., they drive on the other side of the road and the stering wheel is on the right side.

The best way is to fly. You can get a visa to go to Vietnam from the Vietnamese embassy in Thailand.
