Ho Chi Minh City is the best - the atmospere is more free and easy, the people are more friendly and the food is better than in Hanoi.

but I would say North Vietnam (Hanoi) and Central Vietnam (Danang) - more nice than south part of vietnam. but again - Saigon (ho chi minh city) is the heart and soul of Vietnam.

well.... Hanoi as you know - its a busy city. But I like Hanoi more than Ho Chi Minh City or Danang and Hanoi is more safe :)

If you live in australia it will take around 8-10 hours depends which part of Australia you live in.

Probably you can try to fly via singapore then with budget airlines (http://www.tigerairways.com/home/index.php) to Hanoi or Hoi Chi Minh City.
or as i can remember this airlines also fly from/to australia but not sure from/to which city.

HoChiMinh city is nice place to visit if you have to chose with other two. If you have time, you can visit every place to discover the different.

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City was know as Saigon , the capital of South Vietnam, before the Americans left in the 1970's, and the Communists took control of the entire country.Don't know much about Danang. They are supposed to be a very nice place to go as a tourist. Shouldn't be but a few hours flight from Australia.

HCMC is to big; but you can find good shopping and good food. We usually on spend one day there when we arrive and couple days before we leave the country. Spending our time with relatives.

Danang is large; but friendly and no so many tourists, they go to the ancient HoiAn Village south of Danang.

I would rather go to Hue, not to big and not to small. Ancient Citadel, Palace, Old Pagoda's and Tombs. Great boating on the Perfume River in the middle of town. Side walk cafes with good food for a good price. Friendly safe city to unwind and watch the world go by. We spend 3 weeks here every summer.

Hanoi is beautiful. Large streets in the French section, ancient narrow streets in the old section. Good food, cheap Bia and great monuments. We spend a week here every year.

You will have fun picking your own favorite city, as you can see mine is Hue. Cheers C
