If you were a Vietnamese, born in Vietnam, and dating a Caucasian, then there would be discrimination.
But, as a Vietnamese raised outside of Vietnam (and dressed as an American, Australian or Frenchmen) there would be no, or very little, discrimination.
There has always been discrimination against people who have dated/married Europeans (usually French), but it became worse during the Second Indochina (Vietnam) War, especially against girls dating Americans, especially black Americans.

Don't worry about it, get over here and enjoy Vietnam!

Have fun!

I am married to a Viet national and I have never been discriminated against or even treated rudely. Vietnam seems to be a place where Americans are still loved and accepted. I should qualify that by saying we live in Ben Tre and I have never been further north than Nha Trang.
You will both pay too much for anything that you buy and beggars will hound you, but that is because you are Viet Kieu and he is Caucasian. You'll both stand out from the crowd.
If you make it to Ben Tre, you're welcome to stop in and say hi. I will probably be there for Tet. I'm easy to find... Anh My Rick

Like George and Rick, I'm an American married to a Vietnamese. Although I'm half Vietnamese, I usually stick out like I'm wearing red, white and blue trousers when I'm in Vietnam. My wife and I have never ever experienced any discrimination whatsoever from the Viets. In fact, most Viets are envious of my wife for marrying an American. I do have some ideas as to why someone who tell you what you've heard.

Most all Viets dream about living in America and some Viet women will do anything to live that dream. You can probably imagine what these women will do, but I doubt you can imagine the extent that they will go to obtain their objective. They are looked down upon by other Viets so bad that the woman’s family is scorned with the dishonored behavior as well. It’s a long shot, but you could be seen as being that kind of woman in Vietnam when you are with your boyfriend in public. However, it’s more likely that you will be discriminated as a Viet Kieu (foreign living Vietnamese) before anyone notices your American boyfriend.

Something you should know is it’s against the law in Vietnam for you and your boyfriend to share the same hotel room alone without proof of marriage. It’s a rarely enforced law that is supposed to suppress prostitution, but keep it in the back of your mind while you’re traveling there.

Have a great trip!

I currently am married to a Vietnamese woman and as far as discrimination in a bad way i have not noticed any. Though you will get a lot of looks and the locals will say things in pure envy most of the time but none of it has ever developed into anything serious.

I live in Ha Noi and see lots of Vietnamese women dating western guys. I have a friend who teaches English and has had several students, women, who married to Europeans. She has never said anything derogatory about such relationships.

i don't know for a fact, but i wouldn't think so.they do want those dollars and if there is any you probably won't really notice due to the time you are going to be there.

KP
you don't have any problems in VN. Maybe people are just curious.

ong jon
they'll talk about you , they'll talk to you but they will not hate you.. in fact they will make every attenpt to befriend you whoever you are.. they'll probably ask you if your man has a brother you can introduce to one one them.. REALY!!!!

bill s
I don't care Ware you go , people will always discriminate against you, not because who you are inside, but for the simple stupid reason of you are from a different race. It does seem that in that region of the world it can be worse, I think it is jealousy, You are with a rich American, and Americans aren't there favorite people either. Just be careful, and stay together, and try to stay in a group of people, and ignore any mocking that you might here. This will keep ou out of trouble.
